Live Clutch Rebuild

Comments by Skipper on the new live clutch available as a replacement stirred a memory. The old style OEM clutch with the aluminium housing was only designed for a maximum of 50 hp and was not a robust unit. I have some friends in Holland who put 100 hp through it and even 4WD but I felt they were pushing their luck.

The new design is very strong and is an excellent unit but a little pricey IMHO but if you need one that is certainly the way to go.

I had to go to a Super Major that came to a dead stop whilst ploughing. When I split her the largest piece of the clutch left was the six clutch levers. Driver claimed he never heard a thing. The one in the pictures was sawing wood, driving the bench from the belt pulley. Luckily no one was hurt when she let go.

Nearly every year, I would have to pick up a Major at the bottom of the downside of a hill. The kid(s) pulling the pea combines would swear to all that is sacred that; they had not shoved the clutch down, and let it coast, then let the clutch back up. We would split the tractor, and you couldn't find a piece bigger than a jig saw puzzle tile. The clutch housing would have pieces of clutch finger embedded in it.

Great post Majorman. This is my old clutch, 2 spring retainer pins broken (I did repair these pins on earlier tractor split and 2 more were broke on recent split with tractor only having minor use) , all wear points well worn. 7000 hrs showing on tractor. Glad I went new, although spendy it wil be one less worry. Jeff

That would induce a brown trouser moment in a lot of people.

I was teaching a Greek farm worker to drive a tractor on the hills in Cambridgeshire when he put the M-F 165 into Low Multipower on a hill to slow down. Acceleration felt like a space shuttle take-off. :>0

Never could work out how that transmission was never a safety hazard.
