3 point lift limit?

'52 Major all-fuel. How much weight should I expect the 3 point to lift? I tried lifting a large hay bale that weighed 1500-1800 lbs, & it would just get it off the ground before I could hear a "pop" sound & it would lift no more. Set it down & lift again & the same thing.
Had 2 bales to move & did get them moved, but WOW was the front end light!!

You are about on the limits of that early lift but you do not have to drop the bale to
the ground to reset the unload valve. Put the lever in neutral and then give it another
go. You could try another shim/thin washer under the unload valve spring but it is
better to have the unload valve lift than the hydraulic pump crack.

You also might check which hole you have your lower links fitted in the lift arms, there
are three holes in the arms. Nearest hole to the tractor is for the check chains,
middle hole is for normal operation and the third hole is for heavy implements.

Thanks MM! I kind of figured I might be pushing the limit when I had to steer w/the brakes!! For the 2nd bale I hung a pair of 75# weights on the front that helped quite a bit.
I didn't always set the bale down, but tried the lift lever again several times & it would not lift any higher, just kind of jerk & say "I don't think so!" Mostly I just had to play w/the tractor a little. The biggest problem was there were only 2 bales![/code]

No. I haven't checked the pin hole yet. There were only 2 bales to move. The man who bales the field around us has REALLY BIG equipment, & I had to hurry to see if my Major would do it before he got here to get them! I just moved them near the street for him. I'll check those pins before trying it again!
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge of these tractors! I am very familiar w/the older Fords, but completely "knowledge-challenged" about the Fordson's!
