1962 Fordson Super Major

Hi have recently bought my first tractor, a 1962 Super Major and dismantling is going well. I have a couple of questions someone may be able to help with.

1, When I got it there was nowhere for the tacho cable to connect to. Can I remove the small cover(secured with 2 bolts) just forward of the injection pump coupling and install a tacho drive unit.

2. I have managed to remove the outer brake discs and actuators which were all seized solid but the inner discs are also seized on the splined shaft. Any tips to remove these?

Hi Stu,

What is wrong with the tac drive on the back of the injection pump? That is where it
drove from on that model. There is a drive slot in the top of the oil pump drive
under that plate so you should be OK if you use an angle box from an earlier model
Super or a Power Major.

Brake disc rusted on can be a bit of a problem, I find that if you try and drive it
on further it will vibrate the splines free then clean the splines, plenty of easing
oil and work the disc backwards and forwards until it comes off.

When you re-assemble it, a dry lubricant like graphite is best. I have tried copper-
ease and other sticky type ones over the years but they all collect dust and cause
problems.

Hi thanks for your help Majorman. There is a splined shaft on the back of the pump with 2 bolt holes as if something used to be fitted there but is now missing(See photo)hence my question about installing a tacho drive unit(would the one in the photo be the correct one?)

Not knowing the history of your tractor, it seems to me that the drive there is for a brake vacuum pump which was used on trucks or some industrial applications. The normal Agricultural version had just a small housing for the threaded part of the cable and a squared socket on the pump shaft for the cable inner.

This should show you what it should be.

The earlier version is this one. Providing that gear meshes with the oil pump drive OK, with a longer cable you should be good to go.
