First time poster. I recently purchased what I am told is a 1957 Major and I am in the process of restoring it for use on a piece of land that I own - wood hauling/splitting, snow removal, general yard duties, etc.

It currently runs but the engine is blowing oil out of the exhaust. I plan to disassemble and repair it soon however - the engine serial number does not match what I am able to find in the databases. I would prefer to have parts on hand before it comes apart but ordering parts may be difficult without knowing if this is the original or not.

I have posted a photo of what I believe is the engine serial number. It is on the raised stamp below the cylinder head near the front of the block. The aluminum plate is still on the firewall but it just states A Ford Product, Made In England. There are no casting numbers on the block near the starter/flywheel.

Thanks in advance. I look forward to being a part of this community.

Welcome to the board, From the number you have your tractor is a 1961 April built Fordson Super Major. The engine will fit every Major built from 1951 to 1964 so it is possibly not the correct one for your tractor.

Has your tractor got inboard disc brakes? If so it will be a Super.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I have attached more photos of the tractor... perhaps you can help me identify it. From my research I don't think it is a Power Major. I don't see any I board disc brakes.

What are the specs on this engine?

Thanks.

That is a 1961 Super Major, the inboard disc brakes are close to the rear axle on either side, one has the dif. lock pedal going through the end housing.

Engine is around 52hp.

You have Position control and Draft control hydraulics, the PTO has to be in gear for them to work, hopefully you have Live Hydraulics and PTO which means putting the clutch halfway down stops the tractor but allows the PTO to keep turning, clutch fully down stops both forward movement and the PTO. You can check this by seeing if the High/Low gear selector is Up for High and Down for Low.

This is great news, it is a significantly more capable tractor than I thought I had. I am fairly certain the high/low gear select lever is down for low and up for high, the draft control hydraulics would be a nice added touch.

I was told by the PO the hydraulics (or at least the three point hitch) are inoperable, but I have a full reproduction service and instruction manual coming in the mail. Between the info in the manual and this board as a resource I should be able to make a nice working tractor out of this.

Thanks again for the info.

Two things that may be the hydraulics problem.

1: Stuck flow control valve. See Simmerville post below. This will give low pressure and the arms will not lift.

2. Stuck unload valve. The arms go up even though the control lever is in the lower position. The top will need to come off to free this valve. Not a bad job but you will need some means of lifting a heavy and awkward lump of metal.
