Hey majorman!

Hoping you can shed some light on what the heck I got myself into! Acquired a power major 5000?? Couple weeks ago. Runs and drives and it was cheap! Couple questions on it. What is the little button that is inside the fuel shut off lever pivot that I was told to push in before I start it? Does this tractor have a dual stage clutch for live power? Where is the serial number for it? Got a couple hydraulic problems that I havent looked into yet but other than that is looks to be a good complete tractor. Thanks in advance!

Heres what the old girl looks like.

What you have is what we call in England a New Performance Super Major built from 1963 to 1964, sold in the US as the Ford 5000. One of the best tractors built during the 1960's.

The button is the cold start button which allows the fuel rack to travel a little further back to deliver more fuel for easier starting in cold weather. Should not be needed for normal start ups. There is oil in the injection pump governor which needs to be changed every time you change the engine oil.

Serial number is under Number 1 Injector pi[pe and should start 08C or 08D if it is the original engine.

If you need help on the hydraulics, shout out, I have a lot of experience working on them.

A very desirable tractor over here.

I cannot tell if you have a dual clutch, but, as it is an export tractor, I would suspect it has. Look under the footplate on the clutch side, there should be a light frame surrounding the clutch pedal with, possibly, a pin across limiting clutch travel. This is to allow you to change gear without going the full travel and stopping the PTO/Hydraulics. Keep the pin in position unless you are using the PTO to extend clutch life. New clutches are available but are pretty expensive.

Thank you for this information! My first order of business with it is to change engine oil and fuel filters. Ive got to dig into the hydraulics a little. As of now neither the three point or the remote lever does not move. Not sure if they are rusted or what. Was no history that I got from the previous owner. If I have problems Ill be reaching out to you. Thanks again!!

I do not know that because this is my first fordson major I have ever monkeyed with. I did order a operators manual so I can learn how to use my tractor!! If you have any more Valuable advice for a new time Fordson owner I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much for your knowledge and your wisdom. As said before it was really cheap. When I went to get it the battery was low enough that it wouldnt start. We pushed it about 6 feet and it started right up. Runs and drives good just has a bunch of little stuff to address.

Another quick way to tell if it has two stage clutch, the two speed shift, high range is up on the two stage(live), high range is down on the standard(non-live).
