Old Fordson

Hello to all. I'm in.the process of getting my great grandfathers 1924 Fordson F going and can't seem to find any info on how to clock the flywheel to the crankshaft or the clearance I should shim the magneto ring from the flywheel. Sadly, I never see any at the tractor shows here in Texas so I can't pick a fellows brain.

Welcome center for Fordson
I will be brief , I would call rosewood industry in Ohio, ask for Duanes number.
I dont remember if there a dowel in that flywheel . For clocking
I you want it to run right you will need to follow Duanes advice .
Briefly some of the things I remember of what we did at his shop.

The cummutator needs tested.
Magnet are weak will need to recharged. you will need to recharge and replace with north and south poles correct with compass. Buy the way I had one magnet that was broken oil half . I would have ha never seen it if we did do what did to recharge magnets.
The height of hold down plate need to calibration Duanes got the gage to do that that he runs the around the flywheel.
The distance between the flywheel and that commutator coils is 1/32 ,.032 inches
I followed his advice to the letter , my Fordson starts after pre starting prep ,with a fast upward cranking motion in 3/4 of a turn of crank.
Good luck
Recommend you get a Fordson owners manual
Fordson are a challenge , but if they are correctly maintained you wont have any problems.

Broken magnets should be expected. Some may be on the verge. I had one break on a 1927
Model T and parts got caught in the starter bendix and bent it up.

What you have is internal stresses from bending the magnet into the vee shape. In the presence of the magnetic field the metal begins to stress crack along with hydrogen embrittlement. It might take decades. If the magnets were given a heat treat, which drives out the hydrogen, the cracks might not be so quick to happen. But then you'll need to re-magnetize them.

There was a period a few years ago when counterfeit screws entered the supply network. You could tighten them to spec, and the next day, the heads might be laying on the floor. Caused no end of disturbance.
