Fordson Major Diesel Camshaft Clearance

The clearance on my FMD camshaft is .005"between the journals and the holes in
the block. The IT manual recommends .002-.0025" clearance with a maximum wear
limit of .006". Since the block does not have renewable bushings, it would have
to be line bored and fitted with bushings to correct the clearance. Also, the
camshaft should be ground to fit. This seems like a $$$$ proposition. Will the
engine be usable with the clearance at .005"? Thanks.

The workshop manual gives a maximum clearance of 0.006" so you have not exceeded that in a tractor that is at least 65 years old. Think I would be a bit worried that it may not last another 65 years. :0)

I would go with what you have, the problem you could encounter is a low oil pressure but I use 20/50W oil in my 69 year old tractor and that has 30 to 40 psi when hot. Still the original block and camshaft.

Back in the day they were running happily in work with around 10 psi.
