Fordson Super Major Lift Issues

Good day

I'm having trouble with my Super M. I have replaced seals on pump, ram, valve cover, seat supply and return pipe. Every seal i could was reaced. Twice. Everytime the lift works maybe 5 times then it just wont pick up any load. Any suggestions on what it might be. Also cleaned the filter and replaced unloading valve.

You probably should do a pressure check to make sure everything is OK. You should
get around 2500 psi when warm at around 1200 rpm.

You say you replaced all the "O" rings twice. Does that mean you found an "O" ring
blown? After replacing all the rings does the lift work normally for around 5 times?
Is it the same in Draft and Position control?

Did you use genuine "O" rings? Although aftermarket rings will work in most areas,
the "O" ring on the unload valve must be a Ford supplied one not one from anywhere
else. It is a special material. If you cannot get one take it off and run without
one, it will work fine. Later unload valves had a metal seal like a piston ring.

Thank you Majorman

I got the seals from BEPCO, the main supplier of tractor parts in South Africa. All the "O" rings are the normal rubber ones. Is the unload valve the one on the RAM cylinder that is 170PSI? If it is that one, there was no "O"ring on it.
There is no lever attached to the draft and position control, but it is in the lower position.
I will post some pics later today and also when i get time to open the cover under the seat.

This is the unload valve, it works with a very low pressure of 11 psi generated by
the valve on the bottom of the return filter. "O" rings, other than the special Ford
one swell and stop the valve from moving. This can give problems of not lifting or
sticking up. Until the metal ring came in we used to leave the "O" ring off if we
got any problems.
Another problem can occur if you drive out the unload valve plug by hitting the
unload valve with a punch from the rear. The plug must be drawn out with a puller of
some sort or a slide hammer.

Hi Majorman and hope you are both well. Worked on a Super Major lift unit and fitted a Vapormatic seal kit and as soon as the hydraulics got warm the unloading valve stuck. Did what I should have done in the first place and fitted a genuine Ford part and no more problems. MJ.

Hi Majorman. I have taken the unloading valve o-ring off as it had a tear in. Lift seems to be working fine now. It just seem to want to lift higher every 30 - 40 seconds, when something is hooked on the lift.

Hi MJ,

Yes we are fine, been self isolating due to minor health issues but that has been in the workshop building electronic panels and on our land with the tractors which has been no hardship. Only downside is we should have been back in Australia for four months from September.

Hope you are keeping well too.

Brian

Majorman, would the removal of the unload valve o-ring add to the lift dropping faster?

B.T.W thanks a mil for all the advice.

Will not affect the speed of drop at all. Pre 1963 the Super did tend to drop like a
rat trap, after 1963 Ford introduced a drop control valve to the ram cylinder, these
tractors had a knob on the front of the lift casting.
