Fordson Engine Compatability

Hey Fordson Gang!

I have a 1927 Fordson F that my late grandfather had originally purchased new along with a 1928 Model F that now belongs to a cousin of mine. The tractor is in quite rough shape and the engine has been siezed up for decades now. I recently found a 1950 Major and was surprised that the engine looks to be very similar. I may be able to aquire it and I'm wondering if the engine would bolt into my tractor. I'm definately not going for historical acuracy here as that would not be obtainable for me at all. I would just love to get Grandpa's old tractor to move under it's own power again while my mom is still around to see it. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Should work. Ford was famous for making things backwards compatible.
The E27N had the starter option, but you won't be able to use it with
the old tractors, unless you might have a rare industrial model. The
old ignition system could be used, but the later engines have an outside
magneto. Keep them both?? The old magnets could be ready to destruct
from long-term cracking. The old tractors have updraft carbs, so you'll
need the old manifold and carb. or else make adaptation of the newer parts.

In the latter years, 1948-52, Perkins Diesel engines could be used.
There's quite a bit of adaptation work, but they did it. You definitely
need a self starter, though. You might need to provide a bulge in the bell housing.
Would be nice to have.

By the time the E27N ended, it was pretty much a clean sheet for the succeeding
engine, but the rear end, wheels and front axle were carried forward. The
fluid covered clutch and bellhousing were changed.

There might be a couple of points to think about, yes the E27N engine will fit but you will have to grind away a support rib in the clutch housing as the flywheel is bigger, not a problem but that leaves you with a tractor with a good engine coupled to a poor, worm drive transmission compared to the E27N.

Rather than adapt and modify, why not become a "real tractor man" :0) Grab the E27N and rebuild that then possibly, sell it on to provide funds for a correct replacement engine for the "F". or possibly find an "F" engine and keep them both. :0)

It is your tractor and I would support any decision you make even if it is to paint it pink with orange spots.

Brian.

I wonder if anyone has started with an E27N and used older parts to make
a Model F look-a-like? Fenders, axles, wheels, paint. May never meet
anyone at a show who has a clue these days.
