About to become a Fordson owner!

Hi all.. new to this site (sort of) and to Fordson tractors.

Have known about Yesterday's Tractors forums for years, but never really had a reason to join. Well, that is about to change.

We went yesterday evening to check out what is claimed to be a 1954-ish Fordson Super Major (preliminary research suggests it is a New Major not a Super, but whatever). Have not found the serial number plate for the tractor itself as yet, but will look again once it is in our possession.

Tractor is in excellent shape, has a Sherman backhoe, and Wagner Iron Works front loader on it, both in excellent working condition.

This old girl has had some serious care over the last 3-4 yrs by its current owners.. lots of new parts throughout, including nearly every single hydraulic hose... runs beautifully, and looks pretty good, too.

We will be picking it up hopefully on Aug 8 providing nothing drastic happens between now and then.
Looking forward to learning more about this old tractor, and getting some serious use out of it on our little 2.5 acres, lol

ok so the site is not allowing me to upload pictures to post..

what gives? do I need a certain number of posts before I can do that, or what?

I had that problem also , but not sure I can say anything about this how to correct, other than make sure you compress the file size to accept.

Welcome to the board and the joys of owning a Fordson Major. :0) There is a lot of
difference between a Major and a Super Major, things like brakes and hydraulics plus
a few more horses under the bonnet. Major - 1951 to 1958, Power Major 1958 to 1960,
Super Major 1960 to 1964.

Serial number will be either stamped on a flat surface under No. 1 Injector or
stamped onto the clutch housing flange behind the starter. If you are lucky you may
also find it on a small aluminium plate up near the bonnet hinge on the firewall at
the back of the engine.

All castings have codes which give the date of manufacture and these can give a very
good indication of the age of your tractor, they will be something like A5B or 3A14
as an idea only.

Thanks guys. Really looking forward to getting the beast here so I can poke around it a bit more and see what I can find for numbers.

From what we saw and heard last night, this thing has had some serious work done over the last couple years.. injectors, injector pump, new alternator (a GM unit) lots of stuff gone through, cleaned up, fixed up, painted, etc. there hopefully will be very little that we will need to do aside from maybe some newer tires (age cracking getting started and they are kinda worn).

Welcome to the forum, we owned a Dexta when I was young
There is a min post number before you can post photo's, not sure how many but thinking something in the range of 10-15 posts.

You can tell real quick, if it's a New Major, the gauges will be down right above the transmission, and the throttle along side, on the
right. On the later models they are in a bezel right below the steering wheel.

ok.. yeah, the gauges are down low, and not in a bezel.. each one is mounted separately, so guessing it is definitely a New Major then, from that.
The preliminary research I had done said that the "Super Major" did not come out until 1961 model year and the 50s were "New Major", but this guy swears it is a Super.. (i am more inclined to believe the info I found at tractor data than him, lol)

very interested in finding some kind of serial number on it to try to get a handle on the specific year model, tho.
The next week plus is gonna be hard! I want it home! LOL

And Destroked 450 - thanks for the info on minimum posts for pictures. much obliged.

(quoted from post at 09:19:04 07/30/20) For what you are doing, it really won't make much difference.

probably not, but I still like to know exactly what it is I have.

might make a small difference in parts replacements, and the like - maybe not a lot, but I am sure there are small things that it will make a difference on.

From the picture, your Major is between 1952 and 1954. Only tractors between those
years have that style of injection pump. The same engine was used in the trucks of the
time and, after 1954, the injection pump was inclined a few degrees to fit the newer
"cab over" design.

You should have a wide fan belt and your injection pump timing mark is on the front
pulley rim lining up with a pointer mounted on the dynamo support bracket.

Your serial number is stamped on the flange behind the starter motor.

Wow, Awesome info! Thank you!

Still can't wait to get this thing home... this next week is gonna be tough, for sure. LOL

Tomorrow is the big day! the Fordson gets picked up and brought to her new home. So excited!

We leave about 6:30 AM or so to go get it - it is a tad over an hour away, and we should be home with it before noon, if all goes well.

Supposed to be a bunch of paperwork from all the work done on it already, extra parts - including the fenders, etc..

Getting it loaded up on the truck is going to be interesting. Hubby brought home the work truck - a roll-off truck with a "roll-off" flatbed. lol At least we know it will handle the weight.
