Petrol dextas in uk ???

First I am not arguing in any way with what you say as your know your tractors
When you say there were no petrol dextas in uk , are you
Referring to petrol only or petrol/tvo??

Yes, no petrol Dextas were sold in the UK. In fact I never saw one until the late 1990's when a friend bought one and I had been in the Ford dealer network for over twenty years. When he tried to get information on them from Ford Motor Company England they told him there were no such tractors and, at one time, it was believed they were only built as prototypes. This started a bit of a quest for me and I have visited Australia to collect numbers and details from ones there.

They were sold in Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand, I have one that came back to England from New Zealand. I have so far collected numbers from around 120 but would like to find more.

My research has, so far, not been able to identify where they were built, we know they were not built at Dagenham but farmed out to another company. Some believe this was Turners of Wolverhampton who made parts for Ford like Major hydraulic lifts for the E1A Majors, but the archivist from Turners has no records of this.

I should have said there were no such tractors as a petrol/TVO (kerosene) version although people have told me there were. They mistake the extra petrol tank mounted in the battery tray area as a petrol starting tank and not as an extra petrol tank.

Some years ago there was a petrol dexta at the august
Bank holiday weekend rally at onslow just. Outside
Shrewsbury
Also I used to work part time at. A small family garage a few miles
Above Llanidloes and the boss knew of a. Petrol dexta
But it will be a mystery as he died in April
I remember an article in the tractor magazine about petrol
Dexta and they were made in 2 batches
I have a book about dextas Written by Allen Condie and I am sure there is something about these tractors

This is one that is owned by my brother. Two things to note. 1. The 10 cm extension of the
engine cover, with correspondingly longer radius rods and steering rods. 2. The front axle
patents by Ferguson were still in effect. This tractor, a 1961 model, originally came to Canada.
The cold weather made starting diesels too difficult. Rural electricity was not widespread until
about 1960, so engine heaters couldn't be used. And recharging run down batteries was impossible. They needed to be kept warm in the kitchen, or replaced by one from a running car or truck. My father would light a fire under the oil pan.

The one at Shrewsbury was possibly my friend from Leominster, he let me drive his at road runs and ploughing matches at Brimfield until I got my own, then we used to run the two together. We have taken them to the Shrewsbury show in the past.

At Myerscough college as a student in the early 70s there was a petrol Dexta in the workshop used simply for us students to practice setting tappets etc. I never knew it to run and have no idea if it is still there.
