The original subject ,ive just replaced the diaphram in my dexta injector pump hopeing it would improve starting issues even after its been running it wont start without a touch of eather, the old diaphram was intact but with little probing it tore, however after fitting the new one its no better at starting and it now wont shut down on the throttle it just races like outa control,,ive removed and reffited it a couple more times to check its as it should be ,,,what might i have done wrong please ,,any sugestions on this or indeed the terible starting will be greatly recieved,,the engine doesnt appear to be low on compresion but is there a sure fire way of checking??/ i include photo to show modle of pump

One of the main causes of poor starting is low compression caused by the use of ether. I would suspect that you have broken piston rings and possibly pistons. I have seen this time and time again on these engines.

Dextas have a heater and a thermostart in the manifold and a primer in the fuel tap, and, whilst some Dextas will fire right up in the cold with little or no heat others need at least 40 seconds of heat to start. In fact 40 seconds was moulded into the rubber cover of the heater switch from new.

Think you will find that the diaphragm is not hooked up to the rack properly, it can be a bit of a fiddle to get it right.
