I can,t seem to locate info here concerning Fordson Major Diesel engine numbers. My engine is stamped #S443024. Tractor is a 1956 FMD. Serial number is 1383268 . Can anyone tell me where info can be found concerning Engine numbers. Thanks , in Canada.

great source for Fordson // fordsontractorpages.nl // check it out, ask questions and you will get great information. post back to let us know how well the site worked for you. Best Regards brownsmule in NC

"S" in the engine number means it is an Industrial engine out of a combine, digger or something similar so your engine has been replaced at some time in the past. 1383268 is from March 1956.

Usually the engine number and the serial number are the same and stamped on the block either behind the starter motor on the flange or under No.1 injector. It is also repeated on the aluminium plate on the front of the firewall.

You,re exactly right about this not being the original engine. I am the second owner of the FMD.. As luck would have it I was able to contact the original owner . He told me that one of his young boys , in an attempt to help , had filled the fuel tank with gasoline and then used the tractor. Apparently that fried the engine. He confirmed the present engine is a replacement , but I,m not sure if it was a new replacement or if it was a used engine from some other machine.
So , do you know if the engine number can be broken down to tell the age of the Industrial engine? By the way ,, this conversation with the original owner took place 19 years ago. Thanks.. Brian B.

Thanks for the great site. Oodles of good & interesting info there.. Saved it to "My Favourites" Unfortunately I could,nt find info there about the "S" designated engine numbers. Cheers Brian B.

There is no really good record of "S" engines, they went to so many different manufacturers and machines, however on the block, just above the dynamo you should find cast letters and numbers that will give a date code like "A10B" or "4B16" Post then and we can decode for you.

Thanks . Will post engine date code ASAP. Presently I am 50 miles from tractor but will look for ionfo and post here probably within the week. Brian B.

me thinks that the "S" means a "service replacement engine" from the factory. Brian knows and will advise if he looks at your post. Best Regards brownsmule

Thanks for that info. Since the 19th when I asked this question I have removed the liners & replaced the O ring seals. The block has both upper & lower O rings . Large wrist pins & spigited liners. I found a badge casting of some sort on the block behind the dynamo. Looks similar to the Sheaf of w2heat logo Fordson majors used , with the word " Starret" I think . I took pics & if I can figure out how to downlaod them onto this thread I,ll do so. Also verified & took a pic of engi8ne number. "S 443024". Using the info link mentioned earlier by someone following this link this is an industrial engine built between Jan. & Feb of 1965. To be honest I,m a bit confused . Must be an industrial replacement engine , for the FMD was built in 1956 March / April time frame.

You have not found the engine casting code yet, probably something like 5A10.

The engines were still being made in 1965 but were not made at Dagenham as the production line had been sold to Edbro in Spain, a company owned by the Spanish Government, Ford and Massey-Ferguson. A lot of the spare parts available back in the 60's and 70's came from that factory, one dealer in Hertfordshire even bought complete engines direct from the Edbro factory until Fords stepped in and shut down the supply line. The engine remained in production until the introduction of the 2701E Series in around 1966.

If you are putting new liners in your engine be careful, later liners had a second "O" ring at the top of the block. They were made much thicker and will not fit into an earlier engine without the "O" ring. Problem is, most after market suppliers only supply the later liner which will be too tight a fit in the earlier block.
