Fordson Dexta info

MHF35

New User
Hello, I gather information on Dexta / Super Dexta tractors and I was surprized by what I found :

1 - "Dexta gearbox - 6F 2R (derived from the 8N 4 speed unit)"

Could it be 9N/2N - 3 speed instead of 8N - 4 speed ? Any reference ?

2 - "Meanwhile, a smaller new three-cylinder version which was named the Dexta had been launched to compete with the success of the Massey Ferguson 35, of which it shared the basic engine, gearbox and differential casings as well as many other parts"

? shared ? gearbox an differential casing (MF35) ???

3 - "The gasoline version of the Dexta basically had the same Standard engine as the Ferguson TEA and FE 35" ??

Could you please comment, thank you for any input.

No. 3: True. Main difference was starter location. Also different
upper water outlet.

No. 2: I haven't heard this. The small MF was derived from the 9N/2N,
so it may have continued on with Ford parts. MF was or was about to be
the owner of Perkins and other tractor makes had used their diesel engines.

No. 1: Could be partially true. Can you check part numbers against
each other? Dexta is a 3F 1R with a two-speed hi/lo set in front of it.
More likely it was directly influenced by the 600/601, which in turn had a long evolution from the 9N. My understanding is that the 9N borrowed parts from the Ford truck.

I've heard the 9N starter and generator were from a 60 Horse V8. And the internal parts came from a Mercury V8. It may be wrong to say they were borrowed, or even adapted, but they might have been inspired by the older designs. Mfrs want to reduce the cost of new tooling and inventory where they can do it.

Dont know if I'm doing this right. I'm new to this.

Can anyone tell me where the glow plugs are on my fordson dexta. I just bought this tractor and dont know much about it. I also dont know the year of the tractor.

The serial number is stamped on the housing flange above the clutch pedal. Runs from top to
bottom. Serial numbers are shown to the left on this page. The Dexta was designed in 1957 and sold to 1964. Check to see if you have a Super Dexta. Their numbers go from 09A-XXXX to 09D-XXXXX, going up one letter for each year.

You do not have glow plugs on a Dexta, you have a heater unit in the intake manifold which
has a fuel supply from the fuel tap which should have a plunger on it. Heat the heater,
press the plunger twice and you should hear a slight pop as the fuel ignites in the
manifold. Press the starter and you draw flame into the engine to start.

This tractor was flooded in Florence. I've drained all the diesel fuel out along with the engine oil. I've tried to get all the water out of the engine by pouring gasoline through the block to rinse it out. I also pulled the injectors and clean them along with pouring oil into the cylinder heads to keep it from seizing up. It turns over fine but I'm having to rebuild a starter because it was seized up. Other than that any advice on what else I should do to try and get it running. Also once I get it running how do I turn it off? What I've been able to find out is it's a 1958 Dexta.

That serial number should start "957E" and would make your tractor somewhere around
October/November 1958.

All cast parts have a date code, the easiest ones to see are on each rear axle trumpet
housing at the back, to the rear of the hydraulic drop arms, there are others on the clutch
housing, gearbox, rear axle and lift. They will be like "L1B" which would translate as
September 1st 1958.

Any "957E" numbers you find cast into parts are just moulding numbers and will be the same
on every Dexta.
