I am a regular on 2 Ford forums & have been around Fords all my life (75 years), but am new here. I am looking at a diesel '57 "New Major" but know nothing about them. Is there anything I should pay particular attention to? Any special questions to ask? How do they compare w/a 800 Ford?
Thanks for any help!

Bigger heavier and more power, but not as nimble. They were built in England and
are a pretty tough tractor. Lots sold around here in Canada, make sure the pto runs
at 540 rpm....Some applications had a lower speed pto.

It is probably a "Power Major". They were doing design changes to the cylinder sleeves and head gaskets about this time. You need to have the right combinations when you put them back together. This was also when they were changing the camshaft design. Older ones had weak gear hubs, but I think they were interchangeable as a set. Also about this time, they strengthened the front cover a bit and used stronger cap screws. Diesels tend to vibrate, shake, and loosen up. Therefore, leaks. They did pretty well overall.

You seem to know stuff about the Fordson so quick question.....I recall our Fordson having a compression release lever on the valve train for cold weather starting...is this correct? The ranch I worked for at 13 yrs old bought a new 62 and I loved operating it, excellent tractor. Thanks

It's not for that purpose. It is for releasing compression if you are rotating
the engine by hand, so you can set the valves, etc.

Thanks for info. I remember me cranking the engine over while the owner released it, then stop, shot of starting fluid, engage and crank. Cold weather of course, never had a problem starting any other time.
