We are slowly restoring my grandfathers old ?Ford 2000? which I don?t think is a 2000. It has louvered panels on the hood, twin fuel filters, swing out battery tray, etc. the thing that?s throwing me off are the axle tubes which are square and according to the date code which shows a build date of 1966 then it can?t be a 2000. Would love some help on this.

According to my Ford manuals you have a 1966 "X" Series tractor, possibly a Ford 2000 but not quite enough information other than your statement, built in November 1966 on the 16th by the afternoon shift in the Antwerp plant. These tractor had the square section axle.

My information comes from the European manuals but there were few differences between tractors produced in Europe and the US ones. (At least that is what we were told on dealer courses at Boreham House).

The "X" Series is the"proper" designation for what people call the "Thousand" series. They were built at Basildon, England, Antwerp, Belgium and Highland Park in the US. It was Ford's intention to build to same tractor for all markets. Engines and Hydraulics were made at Basildon, transmissions and rear axles were made in Antwerp and Select-O-Speed transmissions were made at Highland Park. These parts were shipped between the factories, Highland Park assembled tractors for the Americas, Antwerp for the European mainland and Basildon for Great Britain and the rest of the World.

The "X" Series was built from 1964 to 1968. It was not a success here in Europe. It suffered from low power compared to the tractors it replaced, clutch problems, engine problems and hydraulic problems. We were constantly fitting updates and modifications to engines clutches and hydraulic systems. In June 1968 the "X" Series was replaced by the "Y" Series which embodied all the modifications, more powerful engines and the tractor became one of the best series Ford ever built.
