Buying Engine Overhaul Kit

I've been to several web sites to search overhaul kits for my "57" Major Mark II. They all state that the Cylinder Liners are unfinished just don't know what that means do they have to be bored after there installed, honed and cross hatched, or what??
A little help here please.

Hi Yes it means that they will need boring / honing to the right dimensions(clearances) to fit the pistons and rings in the bores, so to do it right
you need a machine shop with the correct tools and the specs.
All the modern rebuild kit's(last 25 years) I have ever fitted in Majors have been ready to fit. I do have a set of sleeves from 1960 ish that was
old stock ebay purchase that are unfinished though. what kits are you looking at and finding these?.
Regards Robert

Looking at compleat head and block sets, need to replace pistons and refurbish the heads. But wanted to do a in chassis repair. I am a diesel mechanic and just have never rebuilt a fordson engine before. At what I'm looking at in US this little 3 cylinder engine will cost me more in parts and outside labor than rebuilding a Detroit 6V92. This little project is really turning sour fast.

Hi somethings wrong here did you hit the 3 instead of 4. a Major is a 4 cylinder. The Dexta is a kind of 3 cylinder Perkins with some small
differences those guys can be real expensive to work on just like the MF equivalent motor is . I haven't done a major motor for a few years 1200 or
less $ Canadian should find you parts if you look round. The machine shop is expensive if the head needs guides and seats, usually the cranks are bad
to on a Major if its needing a rebuild and hasn't been done before.

The serial number comes back as Major but it is a dexta 3 cyl. Most sites even ebay are asking more like $650.00+ for a complete kit that is really high considering some of the foreign sites are selling there kits for half that. TISCO makes a kit and the cheapest price I can find in US is right here at Yesterdays Tractor $443.60. Just keep searching and see what happens-----

WalterA,

Have you removed the head yet to see if it already has the 3.6" bore thin liners with a flange. I have a 58 Dexta right now that has the thin pressed in liners, but am considering counter-boring the block for the slip-fit flanged type liners. Two of the three liners have slipped about 1/16". I don't know whether I can pull them back up and keep them up or just counter-bore and put new flanged ones in rather than risk the pressed in ones slipping again.

Since you are new to the forum I forgot to ask if you are familiar with Dexta engines? I call them Ferkins engines since they use the same innerds as a Massey 144/152 indirect injection engine and use the same head except for the fuel injection pump, injectors, and associated injection timing gear parts and covers. Ford cast the blocks, Perkins put the rest of the parts in.

The Super Dextas use the block fitted with 3.6 inch pistons and a lot of the older 144 cubic inch engines were refitted with the larger pistons converting them to 152 cubic inches. Liners vary from finished to semi finished, straight and flanged depending on how you want to go.

I think all of the Dexta models use a rope type rear seal.

Depending on what really needs replacing I don't think they are that expensive to rebuild depending on which way you want to go. I also think that new cylinder heads and cranks are available at rather nominal costs compared to some tractor engines since they are the same as the indirect injection MF 35? I am fairly sure. While you are at it you can replace the canister type oil filter mount with a spin on mounting bracket.
