Fordson New Major Starter Issue

I have a '57 Fordson and am having issues with starting. Was starting with no problem, then last week I pressed the starter lever and the engine turned over, but didn't start. I pressed the lever again and got nothing at all...no clicking or anything.

Since then, I have cleaned all terminals, ensured good connections, and replaced the solenoid. I now get clicking, but nothing further. I've also used jumper cables to connect directly from the battery to the cable that connects directly to the starter and get nothing. Batteries are good and freshly charged.

Based on what I've read, if I don't get anything when I jump directly from the battery to the starter, it's probably my starter, but I want to confirm or get other ideas before I yank it out. It just seems strange that the starter would turn over on one press of the lever, then 5 seconds later, I would get nothing or just clicking when I press the lever.

Any thoughts or help from anyone? Thank you.

Make sure the engine turns over first, you may have
other issues here. Maybe just a bad spot on the ring
gear, try turning the engine backwards just a bit to
see. Could have a bad head gasket or liner and
hydro locked. Simple stuff first

I have a power major roughly the same year or a few years older. I put up with that situation for a year or so then followed majorman's advice, bit the bullet, bought a
new starter and made a new tractor out of it.
