Hard starting 1955 Fordson diesel

Just about this one about a week ago and it's been hard starting on the starter alone, new fuel and filter 1000 ccr battery that turns it over good but will only start by bump or a shot of the bad stuff, just wondering if it's the injector pump at fault... timing is at 23 degrees and when she's running she runs great all around and clean when warmed up but tried everything I could think of but still this problem persists

Low compression can result in hard starting. You may be needing sleeves, pistons and
rings. Ben

Doesn't seem to burn any oil, 30 lbs of oil pressure, but does have a bit of blowby, got a spare engine yesterday, near complete, with a spun rod bearing, rest looks good, will start tearing it down see what shape the head is in for starters and might swap injector pumps to cover my bases in that area.

is the excess button on injector pump working and is the nylon coupling which drives the pump ok , if it is worn it will affect timing

you might have a point there, did notice a little play there , will look at it again and set it, how far out do they have to be to cause this?

if there is play at coupling that is enough to alter pump timing as I remember a diesel expert telling me a long time ago

Did the starter today and set the timing and after running for about 5 min. she started up just on starter alone, making progress but changed the oil and tried the same procedure and she refused to start the same way, got me stumped a bit. Got a spare known good injector pump a lift pump and injectors, guess that is my next step starting with the injectors.

If you are talking about the enrichner button on the side of the fuel stop unit - yes but not sure when to use it...just cold? and using gas staion diesel

over here in UK sometimes gas station fuel is not best quality ... Tesco leave out an additive, but it is difficult to comment without seeing tractor have you checked air filter and not only oil in bowl but the pre cleaner on top for restriction and the intake pipe going into oil

Cleaned up that whole area, filter washed, cleaned and new oil and even tried starting it disconnecting the rubber hose that connects them both, did notice when it's running that pulling off the top cap, ( pre-cleaner I think is what your refering to) that goes on the end of the air intake that the idle goes up a bit, must be a fair amount of restriction in it. The spare parts engine I have has a different valve cover on it, mine has just the 2 strait bolts through the top and this spare has 6 screws around it to hold the cover on and has FL no. on the casting- wanted to possibly swap injectors with it, hopefully they will fit, injector pump( Simms) looks the same but the numbers are not, hopefully that will work fine if it comes down to that?? Thanks for your help guys, kinda new at this area even though I've been wrenching all my life, diesel engines are not my strong point but always will to learn.

Thanks for your help on this guys, love working on old basic technology machines and bringing them back to life and will be put to use around our property.
