farmall H PTO rebuilding

OK, Let's see if I can make this simple. I have a 47 farmall H 24XXX serial. I started the PTO in the past to see if it spun and I assumed that because it did that there was no problem with it. Well, I attached a brush hog to it and it would just go "bang bang bang bang" and you could see the activating lever pulsate with the noise. It attempted to spin, but it barely rotated. Obviously the shaft wasn't engaging the transmission properly. I removed the shaft, and I have a few guesses as to what the problem is, but again it would be only a guess. I took the brush hog off, and it banged a time or two then engaged fine. Put it back on, same result. In other words, it won't engage under load. I am thinking that this giant spring on it doesn't have any mustard left and won't push the rod into the back of the trans when lever is activated. I have attached pictures. Any help appreciated.

Also, any suggestions as far as what other parts I should replace since I got the thing yanked outta the tractor. I want to replace the odd dimensioned PTO shaft with the standard modern 6 spline one so I don't have to use that stupid adapter. Do they make one? How bout part sources for the H? Yesterdays tractors doesn't seem to have much of any PTO parts.

Thanks,

Dan in Pennsylvania

You might have better luck on the farmall forum. If you need parts Steel Wheel Ranch is a great source for used parts in good condition. Matt

That's a pretty simple mechanism. You could probably clamp it in a vise and see if the shaft extends when you rotate that curved lever. If so, I would guess the problem is on the other end - where the round piece with the notches engages its mate at the back of the transmission. You might be able to wiggle it out the PTO hole but I wouldn't bet on it. I am guessing you need to pull the top of the transmission off to get to it.

be sure that the fork, or lever, that engages it is not bent or badly worn and is not allowing it to fully engage. Dandy Dave!

From looking at your pictures, everything I see looks ok. Your PTO is the first style PTO that was used on the Farmall H, it was used from serial number 501 to 45613. Because there are just two dogs on the PTO shaft that have to engage two notches in the end of the lower tranny shaft, they have to be in near perfect alignment for them to engage. Maybe you already know this, but in case you don"t: to engage the PTO you have to depress the clutch first, the PTO will not engage without depressing the clutch pedal first, (NOTE: it will engage without using the clutch if there is nothing attached to the PTO)if you try engageing the PTO without clutching, it will make the banging noise you described and the activating lever will pulsate with the noise. While you have the PTO out, it would not hurt to replace the oil seal, otherwise it should be fine. I am afraid there is not a drop in replacement PTO shaft with the 1 3/8 inch 6-splined end for your H. You will have to stick with the adaptor. Another thing, if you are using a bush hog, you should consider getting an overrunning coupler, this device attaches to the PTO shaft and then you attach the bush hog shaft to it. This device prevents the flywheel effect of the bush hog from pushing the tractor when you push in the clutch to stop.
