I just bought a NAA, got it home and it has a terrible knock only in second gear. Sound stops when clutch is engaged. The knock does seem to speed up as the engine goes faster. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot?

Thanks,

Eric

Well, sure enough 2nd gear has a chip in one of the teeth. About half the tooth in missing. Everything else looks ok including the 2nd gear on the lower shaft. I drainxed out all the oil and checked very carefully for bits of metal -- none to be found. This doesn't seem to me to warrant the time and expense to pull the transmission and make the repair. Does anyone disagree with that? Let me know and thanks very much for excellent advise to date.

Eric

If it doesn't chip any further, and it doesn't bother you (it sure would me), you'll probably be OK; however, the 'chip' went somewhere; it couldn't just disappear. Perhaps it's in the drained oil? find it..... ..

Harry & Zane --

Many thanks for your suggestions. I'll get that shop manual and dig in. Am I doing any further damage to the tranny by running it with the bad 2nd gear?

Thanks again.

Eric

I dunno.....I would be wary to operate the machine in this condition; remember, if there's something broken off, there's always the possibility of it being carried around by the oil, and jamming, and probably damaging another gear. It would not give me peace until I knew what was up, and repaired it..... ...

The weakest part of the 4 speed trans is the second gear.It is easily broken if you are bushhogging and strike something solid with a lot of power applied. I would guess that what you have is a broken second gear and the only way to fix it is to take the trans out of the tractor and start taking out parts. The trans will have to be broken at both ends to replace the second gear and anything else that was damaged when it broke.

Sounds like it could be a chipped off tooth on 2nd gear; why not take the tranny cover off, & have a look-see??

Harry --

That does sound right. I'll do as you suggest. Does the linkage just lift out with the top plate? Is there anything I should be careful of?

Thanks,

Eric

First, clean top cover thoroughly with wire brush and solvent, if necessary. Then blow it off good with compressed air; no need getting dirt or crud into your transmission. You should be able to lift off the cover, and the forks which position the gears should slide right off. Just take your time, and don't force anything. When you have an old toy of the auto or tractor nature, you can't make any mistakes if you wisely invest in a shop manual. It will show you exploded views, tell you the proper procedure for assembly / disassembly, and sometimes, save you money on new parts you would have destroyed, had you done the job improperly. Also, you'll find yourself answering peoples' questions, simply because you have the answer in your fingertips. Happy Motoring.!!!!!

Is it an engine knock? If so, it probably wouldn't matter if the clutch is engaged or not if the tranny's in neutral. Does in knock only when the engine is under no load? Only at no load in a certain speed range? A metal or wood rod used as a stethoscope can help locate the noise. (Be careful of moving parts.)

More info would help get you a good answer.

I don't think it's engine knock. The sound seems to come from just behind the engine. It only happens when clutch is engaged and in 2nd gear.

?????
