We're in the process of buying a 1951 8N for cultivating not more than 10 of our 20 acres in eastern Washington. As a city boy moved to the country, I'm climbing a very steep learning curve, and although there's a lot of info on tractors, I've found much less on implements. The guy we're buying the tractor from has a dis-assembled 3 share (hope I've got the terminology right) orange plow that he'll sell us for $100. Don't know about the plow hitch. It didn't come with the 8N. Questions:

Will the 8N pull a 3 share plow?
What do plows go for? (Is $100 such a fantastic price that it's worth the chance?)

Any thoughts would be appreciated, Thanks

Plows like that used to go for $10 - $25. They were cut up for scrap. Now that there aren't as many of them, and more people are settling on a few acres with a small tractor, they are going between $50 - $300. Green ones seem to sell higher around here, orange would be cheaper - collectors have their color biases. :)

As the other person said, your Ford would not do better than a 2-14 plow in most all conditions. In heavy clay soils, that would be a bit much even.

The Ford will not pull a three-bottom plow (to use the colloquial description) unless you have very shallow, sandy soil. A 2-14 plow, preferably a red fordson plow made specifically for the tractor's 3-point hitch, is the right one. You might trade the 3-bottom plow for a 2-bottom plow if it is all there, if it is in good shape, and if you reassemble it.

Good luck!
