8n headbolt replacement

Can anyone tell me the grade of bolt and the torque for head bolts on a 8n ford? I want to replace the studs with bolts, Is it a good idea to use washers under the bolts? Also does anyone have a preferance in brands when it comes to head gaskets? Thanks in advance.

Don't believe the head lauching talked about earlier, applies in our case. Yes it can happen - when you are talking 10,000 rpm 13:1 compression 600 HP drag motor. We are not talking stress like that. We rev 2200 rpm max, run 6.5:1 compression max and are only talking about a 40 HP motor, not quite the same as a drag motor!!! Bolts should be no problem as long as you use grade 8 and clean your threads before you reassemble the motor.

Grade 8. Ford didn't use washers. I guess you could if you want to. Torque values below.

Why use bolts? The studs are stronger, as they can go in deeper without anything bad happening if they bottom out. The studs are of a much better grade material, so when you are torqing the heads, the most stress is being put on the higher grade bolts and nuts. Also, it is a lot easier to get everything lined up with studs than bolts.

Some racing engines used in cars use studs in place of the original bolts. The studs can use up every available turn of thread in the block, reducing the chance of the head coming off. I once saw both heads and the intake manifold of a Model-T with a small block chevy engine in it shoot about 50 feet into the air a hundred feet or so off the starting line at Lebonon Valley Dragway in New York, so I know it can happen.

I wouldn't recommend replacing the studs with bolts. there's a much greater chance of stripping the threads in the block with bolts.

I use grade 8, don't know what it's supposed to be. I use washers. No preference on head gasket. But...I just did that and I won't ever fix it if it ain't broke again! When I torqued the bolts to 50, most stripped. Cost me $9.00 a hole for Heli Coils. This block was so rotten, when I took the old studs out it brought threads with them.
