just thought I would repost and explain in detail. The engine is still in the tractor and the crank still in the engine. I have about 1/2 inch of seal stuck at the top. Need to get back out in the fields soon Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Matt, I'll tell you how I do it. I have wrench you use to reach in the old GM distributor to set the dwell on points type ignition. An old piece of speedometer or tach cable will work too It is an allen wrench on a flexible shaft with a screwdriver handle grip on it. Put quarter inch hose over the allen end of it, all the way up to the shaft handle. The shaft is flexible and the rubber hose keeps it from scarring crankshaft. Work it up against the stuck part of seal, I don't think you'll have to hit with a hammer. I always just keep bumping with the palm of my hand. I'm not used to writing out this kind of stuff so I hope you understand what I mean.
Best of luck to you, hurry up and get back in field----Jerry

I just got back to this page and noticed the other response. He's 100% right. If it's a lip seal, it's time to break apart tractor, but I figure it must be rope seal. I have pretty good luck to reinstall the rope seal. I take a piece of aluminum electric fence wire, thread it into one end of new seal, and tie it real tight. I then soak the new seal over night in clean motor oil, or if I don't have overnight . I rub it real good with GOJO hand cleaner, no pumice or grit in it. Then I take a flat screwdriver and the new seal under the engine. Thread the wire around the crankshaft, stick the screwdriver into the flywheel and start rolling over the engine, hold pressure on the wire, yep just keep pulling the wire and rolling the engine, be patient, it's gonna be irritating. Don't pull it through any more than you have to get the wire off it, be sure you don't pull it completely flush on the other side, leave a little sticking out both ends. Clean up the cap real good. Put in that half of the new seal, leave just a little of it sticking up too, don't cut it off flush.. Put white lithium grease on it or clean motor oil, clean the cap off real clean and dry on both ends. Just to the outside of each end of seal, dab just a trace of silicone, not enough to squeeze up against the crankshaft. Put the cap on. Get it all buttoned back up, now jump up there and fire that mother up. We need you in the field now.

Matt, assuming you haven't already tried this, loosen all the main bearing cap bolts a couple turns to allow the crank to drop down slightly. Since the timing gears are direct gear drive, you don't have to worry about streching a timing chain. You will however, stress the front seal some, so don't drop it too much. If that still doesn't help, try having a friend rotate the crank in the same direction that you are trying to pull (or push) the seal out. If you don't have anything to grab onto of the old seal, you are going to have to make a curved tool of some sort out of soft metal so you can get behind the old chunk and push it out. I hope you are working with a lip type seal and not a rope type (both types were used). It would be darn near impossible to install a new rope type without removing crank!
