Based on my SN and model, I have a 1970 4000SU with a diesel engine, independent 540 rpm pto and select-o-speed transmission. This tractor has loss of both traction and PTO and based on searches here sounds like it is a failed torque limiting clutch and/or stripped input shaft. When researching shafts and clutch it appears there are differences in number of splines. How many splines should this tractors shaft/clutch have?

Should be a 10-spline shaft for a transmission of that vintage. A 2-speed PTO version should look something like this. Third Party Image

If the hex is machined for a close fit so it's not just applying load at the points to round them off I'd think it should be pretty durable.
I suppose you could also go the weld buildup route and re-cut the factory splines which themselves seem to have questionable durability.
Not sure there is a real advantage there. Probably the key details are a close tolerance fit and perhaps case hardening to limit wear.

I agree. I had one of those hex repairs done many years ago and last I heard it was still going.

Good reference, I may end up doing this since I have to split my 4000 SOS to fix the PTO speed selector so I'll be in there anyway and the splines are probably worn.

I was unaware of those aftermarket torque limiting clutches, but if the splines stripped, you would probably need both the clutch and the transmission input shaft, as they both usually get damaged when the splines strip out.

According to my parts book, if it has a single speed PTO, then it should take a 10 spline input shaft, with an original part number of CJPN7B496B. It lists two different spline counts for the ones with the 2 speed PTO, a 22 spline shaft used in North America only from 1/1/65-10/31/69, and a 10 spline shaft used on the European made tractors for all years and North American tractors from 11/1/69 onward. There is also another 10 spline shaft listed for those with no PTO. They are all different part numbers.

The 10 spline torque limiting clutch is part number D0NN7A539B.

None of them are available any longer, nor are the torque limiting clutches. If the splines are stripped, the best way to go is to contact one of the folks that cuts the shaft down to a hex profile and welds a hex socket to the hub of the clutch, if there's anyone out there still doing that.

The only other option is to call around to tractor salvage yards to see if you can find the parts used.

Jury still out on this repair procedure.

Should be fine for show tractors, etc., but durability questionable for workers.

When I do a Google search for D0NN7A539B it appears you can still buy a aftermarket version of this part, correct?

$531>Link From New Holland. Link Their site seems to suggest they are selling an OEM part, but who knows what that means these days.
