Guy brings me a Ford 8600 with a new alternator and it's still not charging. The alternator has a Arm. terminal, Field terminal and two other terminals. Does this alternator have a external regulator and where would it be? I never worked on a tractor this new and I now it is not that new. There is a draw on the battery because he has to remove the battery cable when its parked over night. There is a slight spark when you put the battery cable back on. Do I have to remove the left side of the hood to get at the instrument cluster? Tractor does have a cab on it.

Regulator is located above the step inside the tool storage compartment on the left side of the tractor. This is with the Motorola system from the factory.

If the alternator has a field terminal on it then it uses an external regulator. Third Party Image

From the online parts book it looks like it has an external regulator, if it is still using the original set up. From the parts book it looks like it might have been a Motorola style alternator originally. You didn't identify the alternator brand; your description of terminals sounds like the Motorola style. Best to post a picture if you don't know.

Here is a link to the parts book.
