I have looked for 2 hours and haven't found it. But I am sure many of you can tell me.
Can the oil pan be taken off these tractors without taking off the hyd. pump to housing manifold?

If not, is the gasket / seal the same at the pumps for both vane and piston pumps?

I need to change the rear seal.

Agreed, those nails are the toughest part. They want to go in 75% of the way and then bend. Yes, the rubber two part seal is much better than the old rope seal.

871 I just r+r oil pan without removing hydraulic manifold with piston pump, and oil pan full of oil. Floor jack. Drop is one person, have 2 blocks of wood to set pan on. Getting the old rope seal out was a chore. Use the fel pro kit. Youtube has a good tutorial on repair. I used brake cleaner to clean and sealer on side seals bearing halves. The nails for the side seals were difficult to omstall with the sealer. I got 2 hours on the engine after repair and so far so good. BTW use the half rubber wiper seal on the crank, not rope seal. Dab of grease to prevent dry start.

Ditch the vane pump, and go with the piston.

Yes, the old sneaky pete, LOL. I had one of those in the bubble wrap unopened for years. I threw it away 3-4 years ago after replacing a rear main seal on the stand. Yes, now and then there is a thread about someone having success with those.

Thank you all for your replies.

I haven't had these tractors for very long but they are losing oil at the back of the oil pan. So back seal comes to mind.
In all my years farming ( 50 plus )I have fixed all sorts of things. I am not afraid to go at this with my helper he also has years of mechanic experience. When I looked at them it looked like 1 or 2 bolts might be difficult to get at. Thus I asked those who have done it.

There doesn't seem any indication that they are burning oil ( no smoke, start good, plugs not oily )so hope to not have to do a complete tear down.

I have read, I believe on here, about some tricks that have been used to do it without an engine tear down.

I hope try in the spring.

I have replaced a few of these rear main seals. They are not easy even with the engine upside down on a stand.

The pan will drop right off the block, especially if you remove the drain plug and eliminate the screen interference with the pickup tube. My opinion says you will be patience and religion ahead if you remove the engine and the crankshaft to replace the rear crankshaft seal

I'm looking in the Ford service manual, and there is no mention of having to drop the hydraulic manifold to remove the pan.
