Wondering if the shattered drive gear inside the bell housing will interfere with the operation of the clutch and pressure plate or if theres enough clearance on the bottom for the pieces to rest there out of trouble. I converted to 12 volts and have a bad tooth on the flywheel missing. Every so often i have to jog the engine a bit to grab another tooth. Has anyone had a starter drive tooth shatter and fall into the casing? I tried to snake a magnet down there but it couldnt get low enough. I wish it had an opening at the bottom like cars and trucks do. I'm inclined to try a new starter drive and go with it for now. Separating the engine and trans is a huge job. I have a Dearborne front end loader so that frame will have to be separated. Thanks for your time. Greg

I have not went after a broken drive if it does not have an auxiliary transmission I am sure you could remove the steering gear and get to any parts that are in the cavity.

great info, thanks so much. Thats what I needed to launch the next repair strategy. I cant always convince myself, haha. I need to move the machine to a more appropriate area though. hope it makes it there.

I think im going to heed this advice and split the casings and retrieve the gear piueces and go with a 12v starter so its less stressed when cranked over. First I need to get it running and get it to an area to perform this kind of work. thanks for the advice.

Some folks get away with starter drive parts in the bell housing for years. Others do not. Starter drive parts can wedge between the flysheel and bell housing breaking the casting.

FWIW, operating a 6V starter from a 12V battery is very hard on starter drives and flywheel ring gears.

Some electrically challenged person converted my Jubilee to 12v before I bought it. I had to make a wiring harness and do the wiring the right way.

The second time my starter drive came apart, it sheared off a tooth on the starter ring.

I used a magnet and fished out about 8 pieces of previous starter drives from the bell housing.

After the starter drive sheared off the second time, I bought a 12v starter from YT that ended my problem.

My neighbor has an 8n which was his dad's. He did the same problem, shearing off starter drives. He bought a 12v starter and is glad he did.

I know many have taken the chance and left parts down in there. There are also pictures of ones that weren't fortunate and the gear makes it's own hole to escape from. Sounds like you need a ring gear so the best is to do the split and take care of all of it.
