Found this today while tinkering on the 172/4000. A previous owner drilled three 1/4 inch holes in the bottom of the intake tube. The edges are dull so it's been that way a while. I'm guessing to drain the excess gas. This would certainly compromise the integrity of the intake air filtering.

NOT! Wonder if he ever considered tying a

rag around it to cover them? Or even the fact that one
small hole would be adequate unless the float needle
was just dumping a torrent of gas.
 
The sintered bronze plug in the bottom of the carb is probably plugged. I recently bought a replacement from <a href=https://robertscarbrepair.com/>Roberts Carburetor</a>. It was not cheap, and they were out of stock for a long time before I was able to get one.
 
Thats a new one to me! It would almost be excusable if
something was attached to it for some unfathomable reason.
