NAA Engine sleeved?

Were all of the NAA sleeved engines?

Mine has low compression on #2 and #3 (60 psi) but good on #1 and #4 (115). Oil pressure is still good.

Looking at doing an in frame overhaul if it is sleeved so I dont have to send it off to a shop to have it bored.

You engine IS sleeved, but reduced compression on the adjoining middle cylinders could very likely be a head gasket issue.

I'd suggest doing some troubleshooting including a cylinder leakdown test before ASSUMING you need to resleeve the engine.

Yes, ALL FORD engines had cylinder liners (sleeves). FORD used steel liners since the Model A but changed to cast iron, a better idea, in 1950. Engine block serial
numbers were hand stamped and used a STAR symbol prefix and suffix to so designate that steel sleeves were used. When the switch came to cast iron, serial numbers were
then changed to a DIAMOND symbol prefix and suffix. ALL cylinder liners are now only made and sold in cast iron. Prior engine rebuilders: don't assume you have steel
liners. Another good reason why you need to always strip down the block B4 you buy an engine kit. I advise you take the block and head to a reliable shop who knows
old FORDs. They will boil them, Magna-Flux the cast iron for cracks, measure bore size for correct sleeves, pistons, rods, and bearings, and advise and/or purchase the
correct parts kit for you. They will also regrind the crank and probably do other stuff if you ask like rebuilding the oil pump. All well worth the cost in my opinion
- you want to do a quality job that'll last for many years to come. One question I have always wondered about is the steel/cast iron decision. Why did FORD need to
stamp s/n's with stars and diamonds? They knew steel was a poor choice but at the time manufacturing cast iron in solid, seamless round parts was not possible. Sleeves
are made by the Spin Casting method, OKA the Centrifugal Continuous Casting Method. I was an engineer at GM Metal Casting in Saginaw, MI for many years and the out
sourced liners were received and installed in aluminum blocks using the Lost Foam method. I was in charge of all GM & Chevy V8 Truck engines blocks. All hi-tech and
fascinating to observe.

'Yes, ALL FORD engines had cylinder liners (sleeves).'

No Tim.
I think they discontinued sleeves sometime during the 01 Series.
And I think...
On the Red Tigers, if the block is cast for a spin-on oil filter it will be parent bore.
Others here can say for sure.

Thanks to all of you.

My precious NAA must have had an engine swap BEFORE I got it to something that was NOT sleeved.

Great advice on doing the leak off test. A head rebuild with new gasket will be a lot easier than a re-sleeve. If I do the sleeves the head would need to be reworked anyway.

Not all Ford engines that are cast with spin on oil filter is parent bore. I have 4 Ford, 4 cylinder engines that are cast with spin on oil filters and all are sleeved engines.
I have industrial 192ci Ford engine that is a parent bore, with spin on filter.

Thanks, Keith

Don't know if it is true about the NAA but the older 9N, 2N and 8N withe thin sleves you could get over size pistons to run without sleves to make things same as if it was rebuilt with over size for more power. But then if you did that come overhaul time engine was toast. Know the 65 up did not have sleeves as the 65 when bought was being overhauled and in boring it they first started boring off center and had to bore it a second time.

Just an update:

The leakoff tester arrived today. Sure enough, it is indicating a blown headgasket between 2 & 3. 70% and you can hear the air coming in the adjacent cylinder. 1 and 4 were at about 25%.
