4000 HD Industrial identification questions

I am purchasing a 4000 HD with backhoe attachment from my Uncle's estate. There is no manual and I am not finding any data plates or anything with numbers I could use to search for info. It is a 4 cylinder gas and I believe it is a 62-65. Is there someplace on the tractor that a novice would not know to look?

Also, for starting the tractor, there is no keyed switch that I can find. There is a push button starter, that if held in, the tractor will turn over but not fire. I'm not sure if my uncle had it rigged someway or if I am just missing the ignition switch? I would assume it would be in plain sight. Any guesses or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

For model and serial number look for flat
spot on the transmission/bellhousing to
the rear of the starter. The numbers are
stamped in. Post those numbers.

There should be an ignition keyswitch on
the lower left-side sheet metal that
covers the steering mechanism. Sometimes
it has been mucked up, in that case poke
around and see what's been done or jumper
from the battery to the ignition coil
(just remember to remove the jumper when
done).

Yes, I agree with Sean, more information is needed please. For example, when it left the factory if it was a gasoline tractor, it would have been 6-volt positive ground. However, a lot of them have been changed over to 12-volt negative ground and with an alternator and still some also with electronic ignition. Sounds like he might have bypassed the key switch and may have put in a switch for the ignition. Now diesels were 12-volt negative ground from the factory. I would take a lot of pictures of it before you touch it, detailed ones. Owners manuals from right to left, 1801s, (4000) 4040s and (HD4000) 4140s, the blue one would be the one you would want, but in a pinch the other two would help.I would check where the ignition switch was originally to see if there is a switch there now. This is from the 1801 owner manual but it is close to the 4040 and 4140 - note the steering wheel.

In addition to what IndFord said, the reason I asked about which transmission it was, is that the S-O-S transmission models had a push button starter switch on the dash, so it might be an S-O-S model that has only had it's key switch bypassed.

Sorry for the late reply. I found where the key was located and the tractor starts right up. It does have the 6 volt battery with positive ground. It is a 4 cylinder gas motor and it is not an automatic. I believe it is a 4 speed? I'll post a few pictures and see if you can decipher anything from them. The numbers are kind of hard to read. The one plate is from the backhoe.

The numbers in the blue paint are the model and serial numbers
These tell what the tractor is and when it was built
In this case it leaves more questions

Model number looks like 21301
This would make it a 2000 light industrial with 4 spd trans and no pto
A light industrial didn t have the heavy cast grill that tractor has and I m not sure if the grill was available on a 2000, normally I only seen it on the heavy industrial 4000 models
Serial number appears to be 38746 or 36746, either number is for a tractor built in 1963

The question is has the tractor had a transmission change ?
Look on the lower right side of the engine for the block casting numbers, this will tell what engine it has and approximate years it was built

I don t recognize the backhoe; I think it is from a different tractor. The Ford 713(early), 723(later) and Sherman F9 black panther are the ones that I had seen and in literature from 1958 to 1965. If you clean that pad up, those numbers will give the information that you would like to know. The top number will be a the model number and the bottom number will be the serial number(month/year of manufacture). The color(blue/yellow) would indicate it s a 1963-1965 4000HD 4140?. But since they often were repaint it could be a 1958-1960(red/grey) 1801 1821 or 1841 or maybe a 1960-1962(red/yellow) 4000 4040?.
