1995 4630 Ford Shuttle Shift

I'm considering buying a 1995 4630 Ford that has very little history to go on. Seller say's he was told "transfer case will not shift",which I take to mean shuttle not working because picture he sent look's like it's 2 wheel drive. There's no operator to ask what it did or didn't do to cause it to be retired and sold. If I get it started and it move's forward and back on it's own power, how bad does it sound that shuttle isn't shifting? If it's likely to cost more than $2k to have it repaired,I'm not up for the gamble. I've never owned a similar tractor but what little I found online talked about bad/loose switch as what some people found. I am good at electrical troubleshooting if I have schmatics or told where and what to look for but my splitting and heavy wrenching days are over. It's an odds game because I will not be allowed to do much in the way of checking it out before buying it.

That transmission is a mechanical shuttle that requires clutching to stop, start or change direction. No hydraulic or electrical controls except for the fairly uncommon 16 x 16 Dual Power version.

Probably best to walk away.
Forward and reverse are controlled by the shuttle shift, if the synchronizer is bad a new one cost around $2000 plus labor to install.
The 8x8 and 16x8 shuttle transmissions have a oil pump and screen in the bottom, if the screen hasn't been serviced properly it can result in costly repairs rebuilding or replacing the trans.

I've worked on both the 16x8 and 8x8 shuttle transmissions and some parts for these transmissions have already been discontinued, I have a 16x8 trans in my storage because we couldn't find all of the parts needed to repair it.

It's a mechanical shuttle transmission... If there is a problem with any of the syncro's you can plan on dumping 4 grand into it. The last syncro I bought years and years ago was 2500 at that time. Add gaskets, shims, etc and you're into 4K pretty quick. Then add 40 plus hours labor to remove and rebuild the transmission. It's not a small job. If you find a good Kubota dealer to work with you may find some parts through that line if you can get technical part details and spend the time cross referencing stuff. The transmission was a joint development with Kubota...

I worked on the 16x8 and 8x8 about three years ago, syncro's were $1800 and $2300 at that time, todays price is $2400 and $3000.
Fiat didn't keep the agreement with Kabota and they have now discounted making any parts for those transmissions that doesn't fit in their own models which are very few if any.
Looks like once NH's inventory is used up that's it.

I was thinking of buying a 92 Ford 4630 and shifts and runs good. 8x8 Shuttle Sychronizer Transmission.
If I have issue with it in the future can I swap it with an 8x2 Transmission? is it universal?

It s a bit like the select o speed to 8 spd conversions we did years ago
You ll need an 8x2 trans and the rear axle center section with gears and pto due to the gear ratio difference and the pto drive ratio difference
If the 4630 is 4x4 rear axle housing choices get pretty slim
