Ford 3600 ThermoStarter - Working?

I have a new to me Ford 3600.

The ignition switch has been replaced to a " 3 positions " to the right vs the 5 position switch in my operators manual where I go left to use the thermostarter. It's possible it's been rewired to work with this new switch. Perhaps the middle position?

Is there an easy way for me to know if I have any juice to the thermostarter. I'm guessing it will get hot but I'm not even sure where it's located.

These old diesels are new to me and it appears this electrical system has been modified a fair amount.

If it has a separate terminal on the back for the thermostart, then the position to activate it is halfway between the "run" and "start" positions. You have to hold the key there against the return spring tension or 30 seconds. Ford started using that style key switch at some point and then stopped offering the older 5 position switch as a replacement part, so the only replacement available now is the 3 position switch.

Thank you,

I'll check it out. I would have never figured this out on my own.

Just unplug your thermostart, stick a test light in the wire and then you will be able to watch the light and know
what to feel for when turning the key so youll know its on

Yes! I will do this.

On most models, the thermostart is on the
engine side of the intake manifold, near
the front of the engine. Look for a wire
and a small fuel line going to it.
