SOS shift cam wheel

I took my cover off my sos to replace the cable, and ran into a small issue.

The person before me welded the shaft onto the shift cam wheel, so that it stuck out the the of the housing to manually turn it. I have all the stuff to convert it back, but the wheel also looks worn down. What is that part actually called, and does anyone have one?

Also, why is there no filter in my sos (should be a model 11- no pto)

The very early transmissions did not have a filter. The filter was one of the first updates on the first year of the transmission.
. Your transmission appears to be a very early one and not updated simce it has the orginal plumbing, In fact that transmission should have been
totally replaced after the first year and probably wasn't

This is on a 1964, but I wonder if someone did replace it at one point. The previous owner did say they did work inside this one, I wonder if he took the filter out and used this piece

Looks like Ford called it the wheel and trunnion assembly. #37 in the link below.

I've never seen a SOS without a PTO, nor without a filter. You have a rare one it seems.

(quoted from post at 20:37:58 01/21/23) What is the casting number on the side of the transmission? Should be on the left
side rearward of the inching pedal.

Of course I would have a rare one

Edit: of course I’d have the crappy original one. There were issues with this style, correct?

I think it is 312259

Can I get a filter set up and add it or is all the internal stuff different. I was just wanted to replace my cable and filter and fluid and adjust the bands. Now I m nervous about it

The filter and it's tubing was designed to go in place of the return tubing you now have. New filters are available, Dennis Carpenter, I think?
Perhaps a dismanteled transmission could be found at a salvage yard for the properly bent tubing and clamps to make the filter and all fit!!

My 871 has the same 312259 trans case number, not sure if it's got the filter inside as I've never had the top cover off. Mine does have a PTO, but it starts to slip at
35 HP on the dyno.

That is the earlier model transmission. Have you driven it at all? Reason I'm
asking is do you know if it coasts in certain gears. My 971 has the early
transmission in it with the filter and it will coast or freewheel in certain
gears. My dad's 63 4000 is all original but has the seemingly rare early
transmission case but has the later direct drive parts in it so it doesn't coast.
As others have said your best bet would be to try and find a parts transmission in
a salvage yard and get the tubing to put a filter in your tractor. That probably
is also your best bet for the cable wheel parts also. Where abouts are you
located? I may have some of the parts in an 881 that has a bad transmission but
I'd have to pull the top cover off to check 1st.

I appreciate the thoughts. I am in ct. I did some searching and found some parts on eBay. I don t think replacing the cam will be too bad, and I hope a filter will bolt up.

I have driven it, but fluid was pouring out the side so I tried to not move it too much (it had a hole in the top plate for the home brew shifter) but it seemed recently like it was having a really hard time moving in reverse. I know 1st and 5th work decently, but I wanted to do everything and add fluid and see where it was. I m hoping it was low on fluid and not damaged. I m looking at as much info as possible about the sos. I have the big service manual and supplement manual for the sos

It seemed almost slipping. Like rpm bogged a little but didn t want to move. Get rpm up and it will move. I see that the transmission capacity is 12 quarts, I m pretty sure like 15 or so came out

Pressure testing may be in order if you think it's slipping.

It should be impossible to overfill unless you're filling it through the top cover.

I think it was. I took the 3/4 plug out on the side opposite of the inching pedal, towards the front and somewhere between 5-7 quarts drained out. I took the mesh screen out on the inching pedal side, and drained another 10-15 quarts I think. I filled my pans 4 times plus a little. The fluid before I drained out was touching the drum, I should have measured it better

Way overfull on oil is not good, which could be why it was slipping (if it was). There's a reason why the
factory made it difficult to overfill.
