1968 Ford 4000 power steering issue

3 cylinder gas

It turns right, but very weak to the left. I thought it's gotta be the power steering cylinder. Then it goes bad to worse. I got the cylinder off. Took it to the hydrologic place and they know there stuff. They said they can get seels for it, but could not fix inside the cylinder. You can't find one anywhere that I have found.

I found a place in Texas that has a conversion kit. It's pricey $700. Only one left. It looks complicated.

i went online looking for answers and Amazon has one also for less then $500. But it's says it doesn't work with a swept front end???? not with a certain kind of loader. Mine has a one armed loader, with the arm on the left side. I'm not sure if the kit will work for my cylinder

The cylinder part number is C5NN3A540C

Your 4000 does not have set back axle
Not steering well one way is usually a issue will the control valve on the end of the cylinder
Pretty simple to disassemble and clean
Make sure everything is clean and has movement and be sure to replace the two small o-rings where the valve bolts to the cylinder

The hydrolic place didn't want to work on it ,but they would replace the seals. Or there is the kit that cost $700 but it won't work with the lift?? I guess. Or there is a completely rebuilt one for $1500.

Is this the style of steering cylinder you
have?

The aftermarket kit has a almost identical cyl that will bolt on almost the same.. with all new parts.. it sells between $550 and $700.

I have been through a couple of those.
Thet weren't at all complicated.
The I&T FO-31 manual covers them pretty
well.
Where are you located? Anywhere near the
Twin Cities?

I had both a 65 and 68 4000 and that style cylinder, The control built into the back end of cylinder is the problem. We were having that same trouble and Ford tractor dealer we bought it from had cylinder in a few times to get that problem fixed, we could take cylinder off and carry it in. After enough complaining the owner of the bussines came out to see what was happening. He started tractor and instantly the wheel turned to right so fast you did not see it move. About took his arm off. He took cylinder off and back to shop and said it was going to be fixed right this time and it did get fixed, no more problems. But those cylinders are put together then welded so impossible to replace any seals, shaft seal started leaking and just had to live with it leaking. We tried to find a way to stop the leaking but could not. I suppose if you could buy a whole new cylinder but that would have been so expencive even if we could have gotten one we just lived with that leak. Why Ford welded the cylinder instead of making it repairable I have no idea.
