723 Backhoe fittings

I have been looking at older threads about the adapter fittings for the connections on the hoe, and it seems some of the part numbers are discontinued, but someone had mentioned you can use a 37-degree JIC to whatever hose size. Can I get a hose made with just the JIC fitting to not have the adapter?

You can get hoses made with male and/or female JIC ends (of multiple sizes), however you need the corresponding male or female end on the cylinder, tube, or valve to connect them to.

Many threads you find that are talking about using adapters are referring to using adapters from pipe thread to JIC so they can use the premade hoses, from places like TSC, or Rural King, that have male NPT threaded ends. The cost is generally less than having a specific size and length hose made with the correct ends.

I've haven't used JIC so I don't know from experience if those work. I have used
#10 ORB SAE 5/8 ends and those seal fine, the O-ring is just in a different place
vs the original bump tube fittings. I never managed to find crimp-on 5/8 bump
tube fittings in steel. Bump tubes were also used in air conditioning
applications and truck brakes. Below is a picture of a crimped-on ORB fitting to
the boom cylinder. I've also reused the old fittings by crimping to new hose
with a new crimp collar, also picture below.

That s great! That answers my question on what size to look for. It looks like discount hose or whatever that site is has about any end you d want and will make the hoses. I am looking to slowly replace all the hoses on the hoe, starting with the ones that were already replaced, as they look cobbled together

Wow! Cobbled together is right! I have seen tractor manufacturers, including Ford, use BSPP over the years and that's sometimes hard to find at a local hose shop or supply house. Without seeing the male and female ends it's hard to tell from the pictures, but it's possible that's what those are. My suggestion would be to adapt any fittings and ports over to JIC. All equipment and hose manufacturers are familiar with and most likely service JIC and it provides a better seal than pipe thread. By the way, a trick or the trade, JIC and ORB are the same threads so you can use them interchangeably if your local shop doesn't have ORB available, and you have to get up and going asap. Just make sure you have the oring on the fitting and enough clearance for the tapered portion of the JIC end.

They're not BSPP. They are commonly called bump tube and Weatherhead calls them
O-Ring Port. They are formed from tubing. Below is a picture. I looked again
in the Weatherhead catalog and found one that will work with my Weatherhead
crimper, also shown below.

Good info and photos. I used ORB O-ring Boss to JIC 37 degree flare and have a hose made with JIC ends thinking easy to replace the hose next time. But a generic premade hose is a good idea and cheaper. I blew the short dipper hose and having a hard time making that fix. I'll open a new thread. Thanks.

Now, say i am not the brightest, and need to change out my hoses and adapters. These are what I am looking for https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/WH_41157X4

Can I also run a 5/8 tap down the threads on the hoe? Im pretty sure one of them is cross threaded because it looks crooked. They don't seem like they are fine thread

Be careful, the one in the link is 3/4 and you need 5/8. Below is a picture from
the Weatherhead catalog. You need 41157x10. Discount Hydraulic Hose carries
those but are out of stock, link below. Also note it adapts to 5/8 JIC which is
not a very popular size.

You could chase the threads with a bottoming tap made for 5/8 JIC or ORB meaning
7/8 diameter and 14 TPI, but not a regular coarse bolt tap because the pitch is
different.

Also in a later thread I posted a Weatherhead crimp-on fitting for 1/2 hose and
5/8 O-ring Port,no adapter needed. However it comes as a 45 deg bend model.

I really appreciate the knowledge. Hopefully one last question about the jic side. Are they 37 degree fittings. I see some called jic 37 to 5/8 oring port, so does that mean a jic 10 fitting will fit? Is jic 10 37 degrees. So many different numbers and parts. Surplus center has 36 inch jic 10 hoses for about $16 so if I got the adapters I found (Sae37-Flr To O-Ring is the description) and those hoses I d be set I think.

I found a couple 7/8-14 bottom taps. Shouldn t need anything else special correct? This old machine is giving me a run for my money. At least if I ever buy another one, I know what to look out for
