256ci Ford harmonic balancer timming
I have rebuild my engine in my 555c backhoe . When I put the new harmonic balancer on the engine will not turn over unless I loosen the bolts just a bit. They both look the same ,the new one and the old one same amount of teeth. Not sure what's going on can someone help me out

Sounds like you have mixed a newer style crank gear with an older style balancer gear. Is there a difference in tooth width? Does the old balancer still fit OK? I'm thinking you have the wrong balancer, specifically one for an older engine. There was a change made to the gears in 1986.

Note the difference in the gears for the 6610 engine (same engine, just a little older) in the link below.

Yes the gears on the new one are just a little narrower than the one that come off the engine. The old one still fits it's just worn out and has a lot of play in it. I put it in the engine when I rebuilt but it was really noise so I ordered a new one .I was hoping it was not the wrong part but I was afraid it was

So looks like they sent me the old style with the narrow gears insyof the wide ones that was changed after 86 . Mine is a 91. So that would explain why it don't matter up correctly. I assume it's a different pitch on the gear.
