Won't start cold without either. After running few min. starts right away & runs good.Wondering if fuel pump is weak?

Sounds more like a compression issue, or possibly the choke isn't sealing like it should. If it runs once it starts then the fuel pump should be fine.

I had the same issue in cold weather until I realized there was just a tad more choke that could be had by tugging a little harder on the cable. It would seem to be
almost no difference, but it is the difference between starting in cold weather and not. I guess when the weather warms I will adjust the cable.
