Update On The 8670 That Slips

The pto works under a load. I got a video of the tractor. There were no codes showing! Going forward, all the gears work and seems to shift fine. In reverse, the tractor will shudder but not back up. I've come to the conclusion that the forward/reverse clutch pack is bad. Do you concur? I'm not set up to break a tractor of this size into.

No offense, but the first thing you need to do is get a manual for that transmission and study it. There is no forward/reverse clutch pack, but rather F1, F2, and R clutch packs.

Once you've mastered the section on how it works, turn your attention to pressure testing. Only a fool would tear into something that labor intensive without doing some pressure testing first. Your problem could be nothing more than some dirt in the reverse solenoid modulation valve, which could literally be a 15 minute fix.

Have thought on this some more while in the shop today. While I agree with Bern it could be something simple I doubt it is.

The tractor is for sale and unless the owner is a rich moron there is no way he would sell it for 1/3 market value without having someone qualified look at it and probably checking some of the "simple, quick, cheap" fixes. Who wouldn't fix a solenoid or sticking valve and then ask market value for the tractor?

I have the complete service manual but have not read up on how the transmission works. I plan on doing that when I get this first tractor repaired. If the tractor was closer, I would do the pressure testing. However, that is not possible. Unless he comes way off the price, I'll let it pass.
