SOS cable replacements

Hello,

I have to replace both cables on my 64 4000. I have to replace the top plate, both cables, and the shifter (it was all missing except for the top plate, but the threads are messed up for the conduit.

I am figuring I will replace the filter and fluid at the same time, though I need to look more into which fluid to use.

My questions are- when I remove the top plate and do everything internal, when I get to putting it back together, do I just need to thread the smaller cable in the shifter cam before the top plate goes on, or does it thread through the conduit opening? I know I need roughly 2.75 inches of the cable sticking out and the shifter needs to be in 10th gear to be mounted back on after the cables are connected.

How do I know the cable is sticking out or in far enough, will I not be able to get into the higher gears if it needs more threaded in? and I'm guessing it won't go to park if its too far out?

It does operate and move, but i'd like to fix it correctly and then adjust the bands

Thank you

Get yourself a Service Manual. The steps for removal and re-installation of the shifter cable are in there. You shouldn't be opening the top cover without the Service Manual anyway, as not following the proper procedure can cause more problems than you had when you started removing things.

I do have the manuals, I have read them a couple times. [b:e206a09ecf]This answer is not helpful. [/b:e206a09ecf]

I also did not remove the components, I want to add them back to fix it correctly. I have the below images too. I want to be sure I understand what I am reading. A simple, "yes, it threads in and then the top plate goes on because you don't have a pto cable" would be helpful. Same as how to know what to look for in the adjustment.

You never mentioned not having a PTO cable in your first post. If you do not have a PTO cable, then I do not believe that you can reassemble the top cover with the shifter cable correctly. The PTO cable needs to be used as a temporary guide for the lower shifter cable to get it through the hole in the top cover when you are installing the top cover.

yes i should have mentioned that. My tractor is an industrial with no PTO, and no cable. I believe the top plate still has the provision for the hole though. I did buy a new top plate

Ahhh... no PTO from the factory. Yeah, you need something to act as the temporary guide for the sifter cable then. I'm not sure what the recommended "thing" might be though. You might try a thin piece of wire and some electrical tape, like what an electrician calls a "fish tape" for fishing wires through walls.

If your tractor doesn't have a PTO then I believe all you need to do is loosely
install the top cover and then thread in the short cable to the proper dimension. That being said you need to make sure that the control valve is in park before putting the top cover on.
The PTO valve is the one that won't line up with the cover if you don't thread the
short gear shifter cable into it as a guide before placing the cover in place.
I've never worked on an SOS without PTO before but without the PTO valve you
should be fine I believe. Finding replacement cables on the other hand can be a
problem if you don't already have them.

Oh this makes it sound a lot easier. I do need to find the best fluid to use to change it out, but I do already have the $500 cable set

I have not taken the top plate off, I have shared this picture before, but this was someones solution to fixing the SOS

They used a rachet extension and you can flip the handle for forward and reverse. its a little cumbersome and it lets fluid leak out after a bit, but it does allow it to move
