Jubilee Steering Column upper bearing doesn't fit?

Replacing the bearings on the steering box.

The upper steering column bearing was destroyed along with the spring, etc. Ordered the replacement Steering Column Upper Bearing for part number 8N3517.

Somewhere I read that this part will push down in the steering column by hand or gently tap in with a hammer handle. That doesn't seem to work as the part will not push down inside the tube. I am willing but hesitant to hammer on it. It feels to be too tight.

I've never given a second look at the steering wheel for 25 years but it seems to be a different style than the jubilee replacement steering wheels available online. The center of my steering wheel is pretty much flat with an acorn nut on top and a washer underneath. Only the bearing portion of the 8N3517 is inside the tube.

I don't know if it's possible that different steering parts were used over the years or if I should just put a wood block on top of the 8N3517 and drive it in.

Thanks

Got it. Wasn't sure what I was to be looking for and assumed in low lighting that the remaining "shell" of the upper bearing was somehow part of the upper tube construction.

after a close look I Knocked it out and it's fine. And now i know.

Thanks

It was a nice day yesterday and I new I was going into my storage trailer. I had a gutted steering column in my hand but did not take a caliper with me : ( I left the door open thinking I would go back and measure it but ell NO I ended up trimming a tree line and a few other chores, once done I forgot about measuring the column.

Good find on your part. I will say the upper column is thin, thinner than one would think. I may have seen a upper shaft support broken off like yours that possibility did not cross my mind. That's why I added I am not there to measure it up.

Yes it is thin. Resolved to get better lighting in the barn this year.

Looks like there is plenty of info on this site to get the steering working decently. I think I tightened the side adjusting screws too much.

Can I get things somewhat close with just grease on the thrust bearings or do I need to go ahead and fill er up with cornhead? It will be nasty to take it apart again if I haven't done it right somehow

Thanks
