Ford NH 1715 no hi range, weak middle

Got a Ford NH 1715, cant even pull itself in hi range,
not the best on middle, ok in low, bought that way.
Any recommendations on what to check or what might
be wrong?

I don't think it's its a hydro-it has a gear shift. The transmission oil is full, with a cheap hydraulic oil. Other symptom we have on it is it's a loader tractor, loader won't lift front end off the ground.
Our next steps are to change the filter (it looks old) and get a set of manuals.

Most likely the clutch is worn out, or badly out of adjustment. Start with adjusting free travel to 1 to 1-1/4 at the pedal and see where that gets you.
The hydraulic issue could be bad cylinders or a weak pump...

What is the hi-med-lo system called? And dose it have its own transmission clutch, secondary the engine clutch? Tractor is ok in med and low range, but high range, it cant hardly move itself.

I'm not familiar with that model, but the range shifter in those smaller tractors is generally a mechanical shifter at the rear of the main transmission or between the main transmission and the differential. They generally do not have a separate clutch, but they do change the gear ratio quite a bit from one range to the next, so if anything is marginal in transferring power from the engine trough the main transmission it will be noticed most in high range, less so in medium range and the least in low range. something like a slipping clutch may transfer enough power to the transmission for it to seem to work acceptably in low range, but less so in medium range and to be totally unacceptable in high range.

Hi-med-low I would assume is just the range selector for the transmission. You said it's not a hydro... so it has to be gear. Id say in high range the clutch just slips but in low it has enough reduction to move itself without slipping. Very common with a worn out clutch.

Say you removed the engine from the tractor and you placed a crank to turn the shaft going into the transmission. In the low range you could fairly easily turn the crank and move the tractor by powering the wheels. Now if you shifted into the middle range due to the change you made in the gear ratios between the shaft you are turning the rear wheels the difficulty of turning the the shaft would noticeably increase. Now if you place the transmission in the high range you would grab the crank and grunt, again because you have changed the ratio of the gearing between the crank and the rear wheels. So this explains what you are encountering. If the main clutch is slipping it is not able to overcome the resistance of the transmission input shaft to turn in the higher gears. Essentially the higher the gear the less leverage the engine has to move the tractor. Hope this helps!
