Steering fix

Ford 950. Apparently the power steering went out at some point. Someone fixed it! I've owned it 2 years and mowed many acres of hay with it. If it ain't broke.....

More than adequate. Hopefully youngsters can learn from this to make do with what you have. Haywire has other uses, um if you can find it, and you didn't have to go to the bank. A penny saved is a penny earned.

PS. I had to look up the 950. Obviously there was a conversion for the row crop.

I'm not trying to steal this post but, if the power steering fails, is there any reason to remove the entire power steering system?

I bought a 960 earlier this year. The power steering leaked where the reservoir attaches to the pump, and the cylinder has a slight ooze. As an immediate fix while I am working on the tractor, I just removed the belt, drained the reservoir, and hung a can under cylinder. If I can't eventually fix the leaks, is there any reason not to just use it the way it now sits? The owner's manual seems to say that the tractor will just require a little more effort to steer if the power steering fails.

I did the same thing on my 971 when I 1st bought it. It had extra slop in the steering from the control valve moving back and forth but that didn't bother me too much. Eventually tho the cylinder dried out and the metal rings on the internal piston started to seize up and it made it about impossible to steer. I'm lucky enough to work at a large manufacturing plant and had a shaft turned and threaded to remove all the extra parts and made a straight steering rod. I got lucky at a few auctions and got all good parts to replace the power steering on the tractor now.
