5000 push button start

Was a push button start standard on a 73 5000 diesel? I found an older operators manual online, but it's only showing a key start. The ignition switch I have can only be turned 2 positions, and it's wired with a push button to actually start.

I think either this ignition switch is not original, or more likely is just not turning correctly, since it has 5 posts which are all wired.

I want to replace this switch so I can power the manifold heater. I don't mind the push button start, but everything I've found so far says it should just be a key start.

All the 1000 series tractors that I ever worked on were key start. The correct switches are still available.

Key start. 3 position for gasoline and diesel without thermostsart. 5 position for diesel with thermostart. The new switch all positions are to rite. oem had heat and crank to the left.

I think the PO must have added the start button, but I'm trying to figure out what was originally in that hole. Is the headlight switch located directly below the key? I don't think I have a headlight switch, so I'm wondering if maybe that's where it's supposed to be.

I found a service manual showing the OEM switch, and I like that pattern where heat and heat/start are left of off.

Looks like most of the cheap aftermarket switches don't use the original pattern where OFF is in the middle, with HEAT and HEAT START to the left, and ON and START to the right.

Can someone verify if the switch part number 124296 on this site is a reproduction of the original? Or is it just the same OFF, ON, HEAT, START used by most of the replacements?

Original setup had the headlight switch on the left below the key switch. The right side had either the choke for a gas engine or the engine shutoff cable for a diesel engine.

The original key switch for the 65-75 thousand series had the heat and "heat start" positions to the left of off. The replacement key switches all use the heat position on the right between the run and start positions because the factory changed to that style key switch on later models, and it was cheaper to simply stop making the old style witch and sell the newer style switch as a replacement for all 1965+ models.

On my 67 3000 gas, I have the ignition switch top left, horn button bottom left, headlight switch top right, and choke cable bottom right. I don't think many tractors came with a horn, I had to figure out what it was when I bought this one because it wasn't hooked up. In fact, the previous owner didn't know what it was either, obviously hasn't worked for years. I know that's not helpful, except for maybe some curiosity.

Thanks, that does help. I bet the position where the start button on mine is was originally a horn. Maybe the original
button in fact but rewired to start.

Antwerp and Basildom tractors came with horn buttons for the euro markets.. as well as emergency brakes.

My neutral safety switch is bypassed right now too. The wires are cut on the shifter cover so I guess they just twisted the wires together up behind the ignition switch?
