ford 2000 3cyl muffler

No. The round one about 20 long is. The oval one resonates if the long vertical one used on cab tractors....you would think a long muffler would be very quiet...its not. The short one that fits under the left foot rest is loud. Ensure that you get the Ford model which has a clear flow path....you can look in one end and see daylight out the other....I accidentally purchased an IH with a baffle (couldn't see through it) on one occasion and the engine wouldn't run with the back pressure.....all the above are BTDT goofs. $$$$$$$ puked.

Thanks. It is good to know these things when contemplating moving from a stock set up. Conversely I have been told by a mechanic that the smaller the engine, the poorer it runs with no backpressure at all as in the case with no muffler or leaking manifolds. I worked on a 62 Fairlane 170 six that had leaking a leaking manifold. Nobody could get it idle smoothly. I took the mechanic's advice and replaced the manifold. It instantly fixed the problem.

Google Scavenging

Scavenging occurs when exhaust gases leaving the cylinder help to pull in more new air and fuel. Some back pressure actually aids in this. Leave it to the engineers to determine the correct amount.

I ran the short oval mufflers on my 4000's, didn't notice much difference in the sound but the back pressure was to much on the 201 engine. At full load the exhaust would push the muffler up till it fell off, never had a round muffler do that

I never dug into the why. Conversely I had a 400ish cu. in. 100 hp JD 4230 and it had a 1 1/2 outlet pipe on the vertical muffler with a 4 inlet. I thought it would run better with a 4' Chrome straight pipe. Didn't seem to make any difference, was really loud and with a complete cosmetic restoration, decorated in American flags, idling along in a rodeo parade got lots of thumbs up....good sounding diesel. Reason for the large inlet was the the same tractor with a turbo went out at 125 hp in the 4400 series; very popular and used usually had high hours vs mine.
