Ford 5000 Tires

I just bought a 1973 5000 diesel which had been sitting for a while from a neighbor. It needs some attention, but I did drive it home. Steering column is leaking pretty badly.

One of the first things I'm going to need though is a set of rear tires. They are really split and peeling, but thankfully would hold air long enough to get home.

These are 18.4-30, but I noticed on tractordata that the only stock 30 tire size originally offered was 16.9. Is there any reason to go back to that size? Seems like the larger tire would be better for most things, but I wanted to check before buying new tires.

Also, can anyone recommend a good source and/or brand? I'll keep my eyes open for a set of good used tires, but so far I'm not seeing much.

Thanks

Tractordata has a fair bit of missing and/or inaccurate information. 16.9x30 was the standard size, bit many sizes were available. I'd stick with the 18.4's. They aren't any too big for a 5000. I have 15.5x38 one one of mine and 16.9x38 on the other. (16.9x38 is maybe a little too big... but that's what it came with)

Here are pages from a dealer brochure with all the specs including tires; note rear options. I've always bought my tractor tires from MILLER TIRE, Wauseon, OH, good people and service.

Regarding tire sizes in general and there was a thread below where someone said an 861 had tires 2 sizes too small.
I have installed smaller tires in order to slow down travel speed and larger tires in order to have flotation. If you go with a wider tire you will have more ground contact but less pounds per square inch so you will have to add weight to be able to use that extra contact. A narrower tire gives you more pounds per square inch contact. Delivered HP to ground is a function of contact area and weight and soil.

My observation has been that the 1965 thru early 1968 5000 came with 16.9x30 or 15.5x38 tires and the late 1968 on came with 18.4x30 or 15.5x38 tires. I have seen a couple late 5000s with factory cabs that 16.9x34 tires. Tractor data doesn't always show those variations.

My email is on every page of the site if there is an question or issue.

12.4x38 (R1 4-ply) as listed as standard tires in the North American sales brochures and the operator manual (1966 and 1968 printings).

16.9x30 isn't listed as an option until the 1971 printing of the brochures, although it does appear in the manuals as an option.

The European operator manual lists 13.6-36 as standard.

I am always looking for more verfied information in documents from other years or sales markets.

There's a very good chance that it did come on those. Any good dealer would put any size tire that a customer wanted on a tractor, to make the sale, and give good customer service, as long as it would not markedly effect the performance of the tractor. We would often put oversize tires on 5000s that we were putting M&W turbo chargers on.

My brother has owned a number of 5000's, they had a 50/50 mix of 15.5-38's or 18.4-30's
We presently have two 5000'S with one on 18.4-30 and the other on 15.5-38
My 4000 came with 16.9-30's
The 5600 came with 15.5-38's will the 6600 came with 16.9-34's
Our 4000SU is the only tractor we have that came with the factory standard size rear tires, 14.9-28
