Possible Tires

Hey Friends,

It's been over 6 months since I last posted and I've only posted a couple times a year since moving into town. I still get to use the ol' 971 once in a while, but the old 13.6x28 CaCl filled wheels are near kapoot, rusted through, leaking, etc.

There are some 14.9x28 "waffle" wheels/tires for sale nearby that appear to be in good shape. Is there any market for the old PA centers? If purchased, I would need a wheel center to presumably bolt on the waffle wheels. Would the PA center work (assuming they aren't better salvaged/sold)? It seems the "screw" configuration would not work well w/o "hillbilly" spacers, etc.

Any recommendations on new wheel centers that could be purchased for the "waffle" wheels?

TIA, I've always enjoyed/appreciated this board and the helpful folks.

Chris

I assume these would work? I would contact to confirm the 25.5" OD on the centers.

I edited this post to get rid of the ridiculously long link.

PA centers will not work with 6 loop rims and there is little market for such centers.

Yes, the centers pictured in the link below will work with 6 loop rims on your 971.

As stated PA, aka spin-out rims, use different centers...

You might want top consider discarding the Ca Chl, going to Rim Guard (Beet Juice) or wheel weights if'N ya need extra ballast and be sure to flush out tires real well
and get NEW tubes with your new rims too. Ca Chl is contaminated obviously so don't want tp transfer any to a new setup.

Those wheel centers will work but I've seen them cheaper. I still haven't figured out what a "waffle wheel" is.

Thanks fellas,

Here is a pic of my 971 from a couple of years back. I've got about 1,000# of wheel weights, so all good there. I am also attaching a pic of what the seller referred to as "waffle" wheels. They are only about 8 miles away, so I hope to measure them tomorrow and confirm a 25.5" center will bolt up nicely. What would be a "good" price on the rims/tires? Mine are still holding, but the CaCl has eaten them up pretty good and I will need new wheels in the next year or two for sure. Current tires are 30+ years old (still work fine, but not likely work saving).

Those "waffle wheels" look like there are 4 sections offset in one direction and another 4 sections offset in the other direction. I doubt that they will work with the standard Ford wheel centers that use a 6 loop rim.

Thank you Sean,

If the "holes" were evenly spaced around the wheel, a fella might hillbilly the Ford center in there. But they are not and you are correct, thank you very much. I will start seriously looking for some new wheels/tires as mine are quite rough. Thanks again.

Thanks all,

I’ve owned the tractor for near 20 years (and my dad 25 yrs before that), but I’ve never had to find new (used) rear wheels/tires. Very low annual use on this tractor, but it runs pretty well. I love the SOS and need some serviceable, but not perfect rear wheels/tires.

IA

These are about 2.5 hrs away, the next size up and never had fluid. The fact they’ve been painted concerns me, but the seller provided good pics for where the valve stems come through the wheels. A couple of small spots rusted through and moderate weather checking. I understand there aren’t "set" values and it’s really between the buyer and seller, but are these in the right ballpark? Weather checked, but likely good for another 10-15 years considering light use?

TIA,

Chris

PS - Merry Christmas, stay safe and warm! I may reach out to DaveinIA as well. It’s probably been 10 years since we stopped for a visit, but he might have a line on some wheels/tires.

The price seems reasonable to me with the wheels and the tires already mounted and holding air. The checking on the sidewalls would be my only concern. They might hold up for 10 more years like that or they might decide to go within a year or two. You never know. The tires on my 4000 looked like that when I bought the tractor and I waited another 4 years to replace them, but by that time they were beginning to crumble on the corners of the bars.

(quoted from post at 18:16:45 12/21/22) I doubt that your pie-shaped wheel weights will work on anything but power adjust rims.

Thanks for the help. As long as the wheels can mount with the wheel center cupping around the axle. It would seem the mounting plate and weights would still fit? But I m sure you have more experience than me.

Chris

I could be wrong (& often am - just ask my wife!), but I am quite sure the centers for regular rims won't fit the PA rims. Not at all sure about the other way around. I was hoping someone w/the correct info would chime in.

As far as I am aware, you are correct. I don't know this next bit for sure, but I also have a vague memory of someone saying that the mounting disk for the pie weights was different for PA wheels vs. standard 6 loop rims and centers.

Do you have another set of centers you plan to use with those wheels, your tractor has power adjust rims and the centers are tapered to screw in and out of the rim
Not sure if you could even bolt those rims to your centers but they are going to wobble badly
