Ford 4000 HD Industrial

I have the opportunity to buy a 4000 HD Industrial. Has the backhoe and loader. Engine has been overhauled. Paint is terrible. Anything I should look at specifically for issues?

They are great, strong tractors. If everything is operational and not leaking then the only thing I might be concerned about is if it has the cable steering, as some parts for that system are no longer available.

it does not have any leaks and everything is operational. It needs some parts like fenders and a seat. what type of steering do they have if it is not cable? is it hydraulic?

Looks like a fun toy! Be sure it has a good working clutch since it would be a big project to split the tractor. If the seller has the service manual that would be a big plus.

They were available with manual steering for all years, which would be a bear to steer with a full loader bucket, or two different kinds of power steering depending on the year. The early style power steering setup used the cables, and I am not very familiar with that as I have never seen one in person, but from the parts drawings, the cables apparently actuated a steering cylinder under the nose of the tractor, and I do not see any steering arm on the side of the steering column or any drag link down the side of the tractor. The later style power steering is a power assist type of setup that has a single steering arm and drag link on the left side of the tractor and the steering cylinder sideways under the nose of the tractor. There will be hydraulic lines from the pump to the steering column and from the steering column to the cylinder if it has the later style. If it has the earlier style, then the only thing connecting the steering column to the front end will be the cables, at least that's the way it looks in the parts drawing. There were apparently a number of issues with the cable steering, and Ford offered a kit to convert those to the newer style after they started making them with the new setup, but there are still a number of them out there with the cable steering setup.

Hopefully it doesn't have the cable steering. What do you think a fair price would be. It does need fenders and a seat plus some paint.

Depends on what similar machines are going for in your area. I'm in southeast PA, and around here it would probably have gone for around $3500.00 to $4500.00 a few years back. Toward the higher end of the range if the tires are near new, and toward the lower end of the range if the tires are worn. I haven't paid attention to the market recently, so maybe they've gone up, and maybe they've gone down. I can't say for sure.

This looks to be a 4140, so you shouldn't need to worry about the cable steering. But since these machines have had many parts
switched out over the years, anything is possible. It should have an arm like what is in the picture of the frame. If you see
something like what is in the other picture, that is the cable steering. The steering column that is pictured is from a 4140.
4140 had a power assist steering system whereas the 1801/4040 had the full power cable steering system. Also check the frame over
well for cracks, breaks, and bends. Especially at the bend on the frame by the starter (both sides). Sometimes you wouldnt
notice it because of the years of gump that likes to collect there. Prices do vary noticeably by location; however, I wouldnt
have any reserves about giving a fair price for this machine if everything checks out. And I have, several more times than the
wife would have liked!
