Ford 600 Solenoid Question

T-Mo

New User
I have a Ford 640 which is still at 6Vs. The wiring was in a mess, hacked, spliced, components replaced with wrong components, etc. I bought a new wiring harness, the correct ignition switch, terminal block, etc. I also bought a Tisco 591050 6V solenoid. I've seen on some solenoids the battery terminal is marked either B or BAT. This one is not. My question is, looking at the image I posted, where does the battery cable go on the solenoid and where does the one to the starter go? Or does it matter? I know the lead from the neutral start switch goes to the little terminal in the middle, but I'm not sure where the battery cable goes. Thanks.

Use an ohmmeter between the little post in the middle and each of the large posts. Whichever one reads infinite should go to the starter. The other one should read close to zero, as it should only be the resistance of the coil for the electromagnet inside.

If I where guessing I would say the battery post is the one closest to the small post but that is a guess only. I'd do as the other guy says since the battery post and the start post will read zero between the 2 of them on a ohm scale

Which ever big post makes it click goes to battery....no meter, no guessing needed. Simple, eh?

No guessing, the terminal on your left facing solenoid as it is orientated, with the button down, goes to the starter. and the terminal on the right side of solenoid goes to the battery.

The correct part number for the Starter Motor Relay (Solenoid), 53-57 is: FAB-11450-B. ALL FORD TRACTOR (GAS) Wiring used the same setup from '53 up til Thousand Series. Starter Motor used a 3-Wire Unit with the Relay (Solenoid); a 3-Wire/2-Brush 20 AMP GEN with the belt tensioner attached and a Voltage Regulator. 6V/POS GRN System wiring diagrams shown below. In addition, all wiring must be good grade, correct, and a good battery and cables correct for 6V. The Angle (Side) Mount Distributor must be tuned per specs. If using lights (optional til 800 Model) also must be wired correctly.
