Curious tune up finds

Purchased this 860 about a year and a half ago. Decided to do first tune up as it was getting hard to start and running rough. Was always a little suspicious about the distributor as it didn t have an oil tube. Pulled the cap and dust cover and it was obvious the points aren t opening properly as the fiber block was worn way down. Seems to be a lot of slop in the shaft too. Pulled the distributor out and discovered why there was no oil tube. It had broken off at some point and the hole was pointed towards the engine. Then noticed the hot wire from the ignition was attached to the coil - bolt and the distributor was attached to the + bolt. Bought a new distributor and am wondering if I should get a new coil too. I ran it about 35 hours hooked up this way. This old tractor is a perfect size for what I do but a lot of problems.

The polarity markings on the coil are only to indicate which way it should be hooked up to achieve the maximum strength spark. Hooking it up the other way will not damage the coil, just reduce the strength of the spark a little while it is hooked up that way. You do not need to replace the coil if you are worried that you had it hooked up backward and might have damaged it.
